Numerous social pioneers made great efforts in ensuring social services are provided to fugitives as well as their communities at large. Among them is William Still who was an African-American pioneer. His main objective was to solve various challenges that African-American slaves were going through. One of the greatest achievements he is remembered for and which makes me consider him as a pioneer was fighting for enactment of the fugitive slave's act in 1850 (Johnson, 2015). Throughout his social welfare services, there was enough evidence as explained in the paper to show his determination in ensuring fugitives acquired basic services such as accommodation, food, and education. William was born at a period when the black fugitives were legally not allowed to either read or write. He, however, made a historic achievement by personally teaching himself these two skills. William had very little access to education because his parents were slaves, yet the present law did not allow such children to enjoy this right. Whenever he came across any written material, he could make use of it to learn grammar. His ability to acquire knowledge made it possible to influence other Africans to oppose slavery. He could even write documents that further emphasized on the necessity to reject slavery. This war was finally won when the slavery law was enacted; after it was noted that education was a social service that should be equally provided to all citizens by the state. More also, through making advancements in education, William was able to engage in business such as in the coal industry (Johnson, 2015). His interest in fighting for civil rights, as well as economic success, made him become influential and could easily make dealings that reduced racial discrimination by bringing people together.
