According to the materiel Of The People, Frederick Douglass was born as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in Talbo Country, Maryland, in 1818. He was born into slavery and at the age of seven he was sent to Baltimore and became a ship caulker. He hired out his labor, paying his master three dollars a week and keeping the rest for himself per their agreement. Frederick planned his escape when his master told him to pay him all his earnings rather that just the three dollars a week. After he escaped to the north he started attending and speaking at antislavery meetings.
Fredrick Douglass was born Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey, in Maryland in 1818 to Harriet Bailey. There were two mysteries surrounding Fredrick’s early life: one, the actual date of his birth and two, the identity of his father. Even though his father has not been confirmed, it is believed that Douglass’ father was Harriet’s slave master. At the very tender age of ten, Douglass’ mother died suddenly. Shortly after her death, Fredrick was sold to Hugh Auld, where he began working on his plantation.
A Paradox is a contradicting statement that appears to be true. However, the article written by Edmund Morgan title Slavery and Freedom: The American Paradox can be considered a paradox, but not American. Jefferson was the first man to use slavery to paradoxically define American freedom. For example, when Jefferson states “Whenever debt brought a man under another’s power, he lost more than his own freedom”, it demonstrates that he was basically forced into debt and resisted giving up his slaves until he found freedom of slavery as he did for his own. He did not care for the freedom of his slave, but rather cared about his own. .
In ‘The Convict Lease System,’ Frederick Douglass discusses the reasons why black people made up about ninety percent of convicts, which most of the blame for that is put on the whites in the essay. Why does Douglass say that the exclusion of black people from White religious institutions serves as a catalyst for their convictions and why does he also hold White people responsible for the conditions of this system? African-Americans were convicted in immense amounts during the 1880’s. Not only were they convicted, but they were also treated in a way that seemed to be a by-product of slavery. Black people were excluded from public locations and were “left up to grow up in ignorance and vice.”
Lord Dunmore started the first anti-slavery movement, initiating his "proclamation" in November 7th, 1775, gathering a few hundred slaves within several weeks to join him. Unfortunately, he became ill in August 1776. His proclamation offered freedom, but only to those who would flee and serve. While it was supposed to disable rebellion, it caused nothing but that. Thousands of escaped southern slaves would then join the British forces in the south, seeking to end slavery.
The use of slaves has always been present in the world since the beginning of civilization, although the use and treatment of those slaves has differed widely through time and geographic location. Different geographies call for different types of work ranging from labor-intensive sugar cultivation and production in the tropics to household help in less agriculturally intensive areas. In addition to time and space, the mindsets and beliefs of the people in those areas affect how the slaves will be treated and how “human” those slaves will be perceived to be. During the American colonial period, slavery was legal and practiced in all the commercial nations of Europe. The practice of trading in and using African slaves was introduced to the United States by the colonial powers, and when the American colonies received their common law from the United Kingdom, the legality of slavery was part of that law.
Slavery had many faces but the underlying concept remained beneath each of these different faces. No matter how kindly a slave was treated by their master, they were still considered property and subhuman. While some owners beat and mutilated their slaves, others were more "kind" and treated their slaves humanely. Nonetheless, they still owned slaves and believed the slaves were property. Famous former slaves, such as Frederick Douglass, enlightened people as to how slaves were treated by their masters.
One instance when the nation's mentality towards slaves changed, was when Frederick Douglas expressed the sufferings of the slaves in his speech. Before beginning to explain about the struggles, and everyday abuse that the slaves had to overcome, Douglas states, “The evil that men do, lives after them, the good is oft-interred with their bones” (Douglas 1). This confirms the fact that what the slaveowners did to the slaves was evil, and wrong. Whether one performs deeds of shame or deeds worthy of praise they will always be remembered for what they did. During the 1800’s slaves were treated as objects, they had to work long hours on the plantation whether they were tired or not.
In 1845, Frederick Douglass reveals his experience as a slave in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Slaveholders laid a cover of mental darkness over the slaves for centuries. The slaves were taunted physically, socially, and intellectually. Slaves were beaten savagely during this peculiar time.
William was born at a period when the black fugitives were legally not allowed to either read or write. He, however, made a historic achievement by personally teaching himself these two skills. William had very little access to education because his parents were slaves, yet the present law did not allow such children to enjoy this right. Whenever he came across any written material, he could make use of it to learn grammar. His ability to acquire knowledge made it possible to influence other Africans to oppose slavery.
Slave Struggles in the American South In the American South, slaves struggled with how they were treated and how their families got split apart and broken Slaves got chased and beaten, by their owners. They were mistreated and teased for their race. Slaves weren’t aloud to go to school and learn. Physical pain was a part of daily life for slaves. They got mistreated for the work that they gave, and deserved a better life.
The main issue was slavery, but there were also other issues at that time. Trying to avoid being a one issue party, Republicans also were concerned with tariffs on foreign goods, the construction of the railroad, other internal improvements and a homestead act that would grant cheaper western lands to settlers. The slave issue was by far the largest issue though. This issue was debated for many years before the civil war. Compromises considering this issue were made and overturned for many years.
Not only was there a slave revolt going on at this time but also a conflict between the Northern and Southern states. The conflict first began when both the North and South wanted to know which model of development would bring prosperity to the United States’ economy, commercial agriculture (cash crops) or industrialization (manufactured goods)? Put into simpler terms, the debate was about which of the two factors, (agriculture or industry), would generate the most wealth. Alexander Hamilton developed a plan called the English Industrial Model, in which contained three pillars, one being the National Bank. It stated that the National Bank was to provide internal and foreign credit, in order to absorb the foreign debt of $70 million.
What common themes bond together the literary works of the 1800’s? Frederick Douglass and Kate Chopin both realized that people were not being treated fairly and thus it influenced their writing. Through personal experiences and observations Frederick Douglass conveyed how African Americans in My Bondage and My Freedom were treated unfairly. Kate Chopin used the plot to show how women were treated unfairly in “The Story of an Hour”. My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass tells of some of the experiences he went through as a slave.
