Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. This speech demonstrates Wiesel’s point of view about human suffering and ideas to prevent or lessen the situation. And Wiesel achieves this via the use of third and first person and terminology.
In the article, “Out of the Mouths of Children, Wisdom,” the author, Leonard Pitts claims that adults should appreciate the directness of children and bring an end to war. To build off of this claim, and further his argument, he uses anecdotes, vivid language, and appeal to emotion. Anecdotes allow the reader to personally connect with the audience in a way that is virtually unparalleled. They can be used near anywhere in a piece of writing, but in this case (and in my opinion, the strongest way to use them) it was used as a hook to grab the reader’s attention.
This passage intrigues me because it explains a little how a body is prepared for a funeral. As a student looking into the health community, this intrigues me because of how it is seen as similarity to surgery. “His equipment, consisting of scalpels, scissors, augers, forceps, clamps, needles, pumps, tubes, bowls and basins (...)” (2) The informative tone that Mitford possesses for this essay sounds like what a college professor would lecture, it can get a bit boring (but then again, that could be because of my generation 's attention span and my attention span) but overall informing and she makes it seem as though you need notes on these (then again, most informative writings seem that way). She also uses descriptive language to hook the readers with colorful words (not bad words, just descriptive) and her use of them boosts the readings likeability, in my opinion.
"Common Sense" was one of the most important pieces of literature in early America, because it was extremely influential to many people throughout all of American colonies. The colonist came to America to escape religious boundaries. They wanted to be able to worship God freely. Thomas Paine uses this to his advantage by using scriptural quotes, pathos, to convince his audience that it is common sense for the colonists to break completely with Great Britain. He says that "a monarchy is terrible, and to have a king is not only an unsuccessful way to rule a nation, but it is also a sin."

Nathan Thornburgh discussed “overheated rhetoric” in his writing Violent Rhetoric and Arizona Politics (52). He discussed the shooting that took place in Arizona over a political issue of immigration in which Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was killed. Thornburgh said that the over-exaggeration n that was places on the “issues” that were going on in Arizona is the reason people got angry enough and why it drove Jared Loughner, the shooter, to act out in a violent way (53).

Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
