“She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar.” Proverbs 31:14.
I feel this scripture is one of the most overlooked in Proverbs 31.
What does that mean? Though I have often read it, I haven’t really given it much thought. But, I feel it is an important statement about how a godly woman is to be.
In ancient times, there were no such things as department stores. The closest things to a department store were the merchant ships that travelled long distances to deliver their precious and exclusive goods to keen buyers.
• Merchant ships have a pilot.
She has Jesus as the pilot of her heart and home. Home is always a place of comfort to its members when its QUEEN is a woman after God’s own heart.

• Merchant ships set sail to transport food from faraway lands.
In ancient Israel, the diet was fairly bland and meat would be served only on festive occasions. This was partly because meat was expensive and the lack of refrigeration meant meat would spoil if there weren’t enough people to finish it!
Foods common to the table were barley and wheat, olives, figs or dates, chick peas and seasonal fruits or vegetables. Now, imagine what a treat it would have been when a merchant ship came in with different types of food, spices and dried fruits!
She is the type of girl who is willing to go that extra mile for others. She spices it up! She puts in that extra bit which makes all the difference... we may call it the cherry-on-top attitude.
• Merchant ships bring precious cargo from distant lands.
It’s not just bread and water; there are other little things that she adds to make her home a heaven, even if she has to go a long way to get it.
She is willing to turn everything into a creative expression of love for her family and
