In the 1800ś, women in England played a key role in keeping society managed and kept together. Although they are seen as invisible, or a lesser person, this world could not live without them. Society as whole relies on women to keep things organized, back then, that was their only job; keep the house clean, cook food, watch the babies and the men did the “real work”.
Women were generally confined to their homes at this time. They were expected to stay at home and perform wifely duties such as: cleaning, cooking, watching and taking care of kids, etc. These jobs were considered easy, but as any woman would know, they are not. They were put into factories, worked as domestic servants, farm workers, tailor, and washerwomen. Lower working class women had to work their jobs and were still expected to be mothers and housekeepers. As expected, upper-class women didn’t have to work. Their money was generally passed down to them or their husbands had the money to give them. They also had a better opportunity to get an education, they learned to read, write, and arithmetics. Social class had nothing to do with the types of jobs they got, it depended on the way they would act. But the amount of class they had made them more or less wanted to be seen in public, like underclass women were generally dirty and homeless so they weren’t as wanted on the streets as an upper class woman because an upper class woman would be elegant, and have manners maybe a under class woman wouldn’t have been taught.
