Tirzah Weisstein Weisstein 1 Mr. Blenner US History/Period 4 4 April 2016 Junior Research Project Topic: What role did women play on the home front during WW2? Throughout the duration of World War Two women played a substantial role in the victory of the US. They participated in many jobs that weren’t normally performed by women previously. Many of whom served in the Military, repairing war vehicles such as airplanes and trucks. Of the many icons, one of the most prominent during World War II was Rosie the Riveter. The sudden need for men on the warfront and industrialized weaponry production meant that women would take an enlarged role on the home front during the war. Furthermore women had different roles in society at that time; many of them began working for the army performing a variety of jobs. WASP’s started in two groups, first with a women named Nancy Love who organized a group of experienced women pilots, which resulted in the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). Then came aviator Jacqueline Cochran, who started a flight school, which helped the need for pilots, this turned into Women’s Flying Training Detachment (WFTD). Eventually the WAFS and the WFTD merged to form the WASP’s (Vickie Lewis, 82). A large portion of their job remained on the homefront performing tasks such as test-flying repaired planes, Part of their job was to deliver new planes to the military bases, which meant they went into combat zones. However, the WASP’s were hired only as civilians, so they weren’t part of the military. Due to this separation between civilians and the military, these women were not granted any insurance and did not earn as much as male pilots as well (Amy Nathan 39,43).
