Analysis Of The Theme in Wonder
Kindness is crucial in the world today. To be kind to someone means acting in a benevolent, helpful, and loving manner. Just small acts of kindness can make a day and night difference. Putting a smile on someone’s face can make his/her day a lot better. People can see kindness everywhere in the world around them, and many novels today are trying to spread this message of kindness. Wonder by R.J. Palacio is one of those novels. The main character in this story, August, is starting fifth grade at Beecher Prep Middle School. He has been homeschooled his whole life, and this is his first time going to a mainstream school. Middle school is difficult enough, but being the new kid can make it even more challenging. August, or Auggie, is just like everyone else except he has his own form of uniqueness. He was born with a facial deformity that makes him look different from the rest. In Wonder, many events happen that emphasize the importance of kindness. This theme is emphasized throughout Wonder by R.J. During all the times where everyone makes fun of Auggie at school, Jack is his friend. Julian, a very rude character constantly bullys Auggie. One day, Julian takes a joke and this results in Jack punching Julian. This event resulted in Jack getting suspended even though he was just defending his friend. He also received an email from his principal, Mr. Tushman, stating, “While nothing justifies striking another student ever- I also know a good friend is sure worth defending” (161). Although, Jack has stuck another classmate, this act shows some kindness due to the reason why Jack has done that. Mr. Tushman phrases it in a wonderful way that people are worth defending.
