The wedding takes place on a Saturday in July in Nineteen Hundred and Twenty, which is two years after the end of the First World War. Before the play begins, it is the World War I that is taking place. The First World War began on July 28, 1914, when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This conflict between two countries spread very quickly. Soon, Germany, Russia, Great Britain, and France were all in the war. A large amount of this was because they were involved in treaties that made them obligated to defend some of the other nations. The Great War started in 1914 and ended in 1918. In late 1918, a few months before The Great War ended, the Spanish influenza struck many people. Along with Europe and North America, Alberta was immensely affected by the epidemic. The Great War also affected schooling in Alberta. When the war began, there were male teachers who left to fight in Europe. Approximately 64,944 Canadians were killed in World War 1. In this play, Charlie Edwards was one of them. This has happened before the play begins. At the beginning of the story, Mary tells Charlie she has recently immigrated to Canada with her mother to join her father and her mother says they’ve immigrated to Canada “to live with the colonists in the wilds of the Canadas”. It is there that she meets this lovely farm boy whom she ends up falling in love with. Mary has a very fun and adventurous soul. She’s a very positive and free spirited woman who has a very romantic and positive view on things. During the beginning of the play, we learn Mary loves to dream because she tells Charlie she loves dreams a lot and has very “lovely dreams”. At the end, Mary develops into someone who has finally come to accept the loss of her love, Charlie
