The quote “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” gives the readers a message that the conditions could be positive or negative at the same time depending on the point of view. Three characters who show that the conditions could be both negative and positive are Lucie, who has several positive moments, Charles Darnay, who is mentioned with multiple negative moments, but has so positive moments, and lastly Sydney Carton, who gets the negatives while others are getting the positives.These three characters each have different experiences through the book and easily show how this quote is correct about this time. First, when we are introduced to Darnay he is having a negative experience. Darnay is on trial at the Old Bailey law court, and this shows that at this moment he is having “the worst of times”. Surprisingly, this event is turned around and he is found not guilty due to of Sydney Carton who shares an uncanny resemblance to Darnay, and his lawyer, Mr.Stryver uses this to persuade the jury into thinking that Darnay was not guilty and just here on family matters with Carton. Next, Charles Darnay shows one of the best moments for him, but a worst, for others when he gets engaged to Lucie while two others are also fighting for her hand in marriage. Charles is the first to speak to Lucie’s father, Doctor Manette, about marrying his daughter and that cause Mr.Stryver to withdraw from asking Lucie when he is told by Mr.Lorry that he is better to withdraw his offer. Then there is Carton, who is in love with Louis but decides that he can’t be with her for he buried himself in his life and doesn’t believe there is hope for himself. Though this is negative for the other two men, it’s positive for Darnay and shows that this was both the best and worst of times depending on point of view. All in All, Charles had both negative and positive events, and those events certainly showed how it was the best and worst of times for
