One very important issue of immigration that should be mentioned is adaptation, or as many others call it, integration. Adaptation, according to the Dictionary Unabridged, is “a slow, usually unconscious modification of individual and social activity in adjustment to cultural surroundings” (Adaptation). To integrate is in some way to become involved with other citizens of a place in the many activities of daily life. This includes, for example, respect for the laws, dress code, food, religious life, business structures, and language of the place. Another challenge facing immigrants is to try to make a connection with local people, which is of vital importance in order to live in solidarity and friendship. However, in order to reach good integration, it is necessary to overcome a series of problems. The fundamental problem in general is racism and xenophobia. Racism is defined in the Dictionary Unabridged as “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate other or that a particular racial groups is inferior to the others” (Racism). …show more content…
