On January 2, 1938 in the city of Mount Vernon, New York, computer scientist and electrical engineer Lynn Conway was welcomed into the world (“Lynn Conway”, n.d.). Lynn Conway, currently age seventy eight, is still alive to see the impact of her contributions to computer architecture, continues to support the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Plus (LGBT+) community, and advocates for transgender rights. Her childhood mostly consisted of mixed emotions on her biological gender. The start of her career began by channeling her love for technology when applying for colleges. Some of Lynn Conway’s awards for her achievements in technology include, but are not limited to, the 2009 Computer Pioneer Award, Computer History Museum 2014, Society of Women Engineers National Achievement Award, election to the Electronic Design Hall of Fame, and election as a Member of the National Academy of Engineering (Lynn Conway IEEE Computer Society, n.d.). The majority of the reasons that Lynn Conway was awarded was because of her high significance to computer architecture and for her widespread teachings of her methods. An award she achieved pertaining to the transgender community includes the 2005 Engineer of the Year, by the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (“Lynn Conway”, n.d.). Because her website was, “a beacon of hope and encouragement for gender transitioners world-wide and a trans focal-point to help expose the Gender Madness in American Psychiatry” (“Lynn’s 2016 BioSketch, n.d.), Lynn was acknowledged for her significance in the LGBT+ community.
