Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth AP World History, like many other social study courses, covers an extensive amount of civilizations and empires; yet, because of limited time, not all can be included. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth stands by many other ignored empires, despite its stature and significance. Instigated by the Union of Lublin in 1569, the commonwealth succeeded in its reign as a bi-confederation, spanning its rule until 1795. It consisted of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland as well as the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; currently, the countries that once were incorporated are Poland, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Belarus, Russia, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, and Ukraine. The commonwealth has an enormous impact on the modern countries it once covered. For instance, after the collapse in 1795, the people of Poland and Lithuania no longer had an independent state, as they were occupied by neighboring countries Russia, Austria and Prussia until 1918. However, the unity and culture from the commonwealth was preserved, and allowed high morale and nationalism amongst those that once belonged to the commonwealth. It is apparent, as even the opening line of the Polish National Anthem is Jeszcze Polska nie zginela poki my zyjemy, meaning Because we live, Poland has yet not parished. Due to this, language, culture, and a strong sense of unity was never lost, which eventually led to the independence. To justify the Commonwealth’s importance, one can look to its influence and legacy, and see that present day Poland, Lithuania, and other Eastern European states show elements of the culture and history that retained in the area controlled by the Polish-Lithuanian
