The way Bobby finds out about the baby is Nia is sitting on his front porch with a red balloon. we eventually find out that after the birth, Nia goes in to a coma. Nia experience eclampsia, which is a seizure during a woman's pregnancy. while Nia is in the coma, Bobby has to take care of Feather. Adding on to the stress, he has to wake up every night to take care of Feather, then he has to take her to the babysitter and head to school, and then finally work. through the book Bobby is going to experience some changes that will change his world.

The red balloon that Nia gives to Bobby, symbolizes a child. Nia is trying to tell Bobby that she is pregnant. "Just sittin' there with a balloon, looking all lost." "I'll never forget that look and how her voice shook when she said, Bobby, i've got something to tell you. then she hands me the balloon."
