In this article, it discussed the importance of having writer’s workshops in the classroom. “Many researchers have discussed the benefits of encouraging students to share their writing. These include providing authentic purposes for writing, a platform for thinking and learning, and an opportunity to build confidence in their reading, writing, and speaking abilities.( Hall, 2014)” These workshops provide students with opportunities to share their writing amongst their peers, teachers, and visitors (family members and administrators). Step 1: Identify your purposes for sharing. As a teacher, you will have to decide the reason for the students to share their writings in the classroom. You have to question, whether the students’ purpose for writing will connect with their purpose for sharing. For instance, “students share their how-to-stories with peers, they test out the clarity of their step-by-step directions with an audience or simply showcasing a completed piece of writing. (Hall, 2014)” Step 2: Develop procedures and guidelines, it is crucial to involve the students in this step. This is when the students are able to develop expectations of the audience. As a result, the expectations of the audience allows the audience to participate in meaningful conversations with the reader. Step 3: Model and reinforce audience behavior, this is when the teacher models good and bad audience behavior and as a class you will decide which one that is appropriate to do while listening to a classmate read. In addition, it is very important to remind the students in the audience to model the good audience behavior. Step 4: Pass the torch, this step is for the students to establish a comfortable sharing time. The students will have control over their environment, meaning that the reader will call on their peers to comment and ask questions. Step 5: Provide a choice of audience, this step simply allows the students to pick who and they decide to share their writings with.
