James Nuci Mr. Ottman English 11 AP 23 August 2017 Essay 21: Innovative author and presence on the Internet, Steven Johnson, in his excerpt from everything that is good for you; how today's popular culture is actually making us smarter (2005), publicizes that the general population would have dramatically different viewpoints if presented with different chronological circumstances. He supports his claim by first offering statistics that summarize pleasure readers' positive impact on society, then having readers visualize the world with certain circumstances, then breaking down two opposing sides of an argument, and then finally clarifying his own point of view on the topic. Johnson's purpose is to shine light on the controversial standpoint of many people on a certain topic, in order to allow readers to understand both sides of the argument along with their pros and cons. He creates a professional tone for people associated with pleasure reading or playing video games.

World War Video Games In Steven Johnson ’s essay “Games” (2005), he constructs his argument by saying that playing video games is no better or worse than reading, it is simply exercising different skills. What kept my interest in this short essay was the fresh take on the subject on how video games effect young adults. He addresses the audience knowing they will agree with his contrast of the two subjects or take it to be completely true. His explanation of it allows him to reach even the biased of readers to accept the rest of his argument.
Auschwitz: True Tales from a Grotesque Land is a memoir of Sara Nomberg- Przytyk, who spent a count of years in Auschwitz, at a concentration camp. She witnessed many unforgettable, yet gruesome things at the concentration camp; she describes all the horrible events and still seeks hope throughout the book. Nomberg- Prztyk is an unusual prisoner, and one of the special worker who worked at the hospital. Therefore, she got better treatment than other prisoners; she was even exempted from going to the gas chamber and always had enough to eat. She uses the special treatment to talk to people she comes across, and share their story.
In his book Monument Wars: Washington, D.C., the National mall, and the Transformation of the Memorial Landscape, Kirk Savage states that the reason why Americans visits monuments is because “there is a face-to-face encounter, with the public, the monument speaks to deep needs of attachment that can only be met in a real place”. I agree with Savage’s statement because it explains how monuments and the public audience are capable of a having a connection which leads to the encounter to become emotional and educational, causing the audience to process what they see and learn. One example of this is the 9/11 memorial site. When people go to this site, they become overwhelmed and captivated by what they see. It’s a memorial site that brings people to tears because of the history that’s behind it.

Perseverance helps push a person past their limits to reach their goal. Throughout the book, Odysseus faces many problems he must solve in order to return home to Ithaca. He must escape the Cyclops’s cave, figure out a way to get past the sirens, and dodge the dangerous sea monsters. His determination will help him get back home to see his wife Penelope and return to rule Ithaca. In The Odyssey, Homer presents the idea that perseverance can make a person stronger when they overcome many obstacles and have a goal to work towards.
This book is well supported by facts. He firstly talks about the world of video games and online “entertainments”. Here children's exposure to violent images through gaming and early sexualisation through various media
Many people believe that prisoners in Auschwitz do exactly what they are told, and nothing else. On the contrary, these prisoners took advantage of every opportunity and were selfish when it came down to a matter of life or death. They also had to rely on themselves, and not depend on others in order to survive. In the novels Night and Maus II by Elie Wiesel and Art Spiegelman, the main characters Elie and Vladek are prisoners at Auschwitz. Both Vladek and Elie take advantage of opportunities given.
In the study of history, events leading to tragic are being taught to avoid future mistakes, as well as to prevent recurring flaws. Many times, certain situations occurred in the past are meant to teach us a valuable lessons. For instance, one of the examples is the Japanese Internment Camp, also known and called the “Relocation Camp” during World War II. America entered World War II, when a sudden attack was made by Japan in the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. In just a 24 hour period, it was reported that 1,291 ordinary Japanese-American leaders from different communities were detained by the F.B.I. without any charges.
It’s wrong to play Pokemon at Auschwitz Is it wrong to play pokemon at Auschwitz? Leonard Pitts writes how there are people in the world that are trying to catch “digital creatures’ in the most sacred places in the work, where the worst of the worst happened. He was shocked to hear that Arlington had to tweet “We do not consider playing ‘Pokémon Go’ to be appropriate decorum on the grounds of ANC.” as if that already isn’t common sense. Pitts states that Pokemon Go, a global sensation game that is synced to the real world and apparently characters pop up when you’re are at the Crematoria at Auschwitz or John F Kennedy's Grave Sight.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the main character Rainsford had gotten stranded on a dangerous island where Zaroff, a Russian Cossack General, hunted humans for sport. He feels that God put the weak on earth to give the strong pleasure, and up until it was his turn to be hunted, so did Rainsford. Earlier in the story Rainsford had stated, “The world is made up of two classes-- the hunters and the huntees.” And as harsh as it may sound, it is technically correct. The world is made of hunters and huntees, predator and prey.
Should monuments be removed? For many years people have been arguing whether certain controversial monuments, such as statues, should be destroyed or removed. A common type of monuments in this situation are the Confederacy monuments. These are various statues across the US which honor Confederate leaders or “heroes”. Many see these offensive since those people basically oppressed African Americans for years and were fighting to keep doing so.
Theories of Visual culture Research paper THESIS STATEMENT “Games have always been a huge part of pop culture and have had an impact on the world but the gaming industry itself has not been politically correct when it comes to showcasing different races. Parents as well as teachers and other adults must take responsibility for watching and controlling what sort of video games their children and teenagers are playing. Parents need to be more involved when it comes to what sort of content their children are being exposed to. Parents should understand what games their children are playing. Since the audience that is being discussed is for the most part under the age of eighteen they cannot legally purchase many of the violent video games on the market for a store they must go through a person over eighteen usually their parents. There are many ratings boards that were created online to help parents understand what a certain game is about what age they suggest the player should be and
