Pattyn Von Stratten is one of several daughters raised in a Mormon home by their abusive drunk father and distant mother. Being the oldest, Pattyn holds the role of being the primary care giver since her mother fails to do so. As a teenage girl, she is faced with many challenges, especially since her Mormon community has something to say about every move she makes. Throughout Burned, Ellen Hopkins was able to show a teenage girl’s thought process on abuse, faith, and the ability to love.

Lindsey Matthiesen November 23, 2015 Throughout Barbara Kingsolver’s The Bean Trees and Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Interpreter of Maladies examples are shown of people who have never struggled with moving to a different country, try and make the lives worse of those who have. First, Esperanza and Stephan are not accepted because of their origin. Second, Boori Ma is blamed for a robbery that took place while she was wandering the streets and finally, Eliot’s mom questions Mrs. Sen’s credibility because she is from a different country. In these two books ignorance is shown as believing in stereotypes of a culture. that are not true.
In the book “Across Five Aprils” by Irene Hunt, the author makes a few statements to portray her feelings toward the war, she uses the characters and their actions to show her emotions and thoughts about it. The views on war change throughout the book, in the beginning Tom and Jethro think war is going to be so cool, but as time went on their thoughts change. I believe one of her views from the book shows that she is passionate towards war, she uses Tom to demonstrate this. Tom is a soldier, and he is very passionate about what he does for the Union.
josh Sundquist has trust issues, he doesn 't feel like he 's good enough for anybody. but Josh Sundquist is a fighter, he sees the beauty in everything and always tries to give 100 percent effort. I find myself in the way Josh Sundquist acts toward others and how he feels about himself. the way he always wants the people he is around to love themselves and be better, how he fights for what he believes in, and how he wants to get 100 percent out of life and won 't just give 100 perfect effort and just quit.
He arrives to work and see's Pino, his coworker, and son of Sal, give him a dirty look and said, " you are late". Pino is a racist person who does not like black people and does not get along with Mookie. In contrast, Vito is a nice and respectful individual who is friends with Mookie. It is with these four individuals that Sal's pizzeria had become so well known in New York. Sal is a person who likes to help everyone and is a well-rounded individual.
Station Eleven is a story filled with many different plotlines and backstories, all intricately woven together to paint a fascinating image of life after the Georgia Flu pandemic. The character development is one of the most intriguing parts of the novel, as the reader is surprised again and again with the actions and connections of each figure. Many of the characters enter both as background members in some scenes and as main characters in others, so that their stories flow smoothly with the others. Two characters that this can be applied to are Tyler, Arthur’s son, and Kirsten, a child actor turned into a performer with a travelling groupe after the near-extinction of the human race. In the story A & P Sammy is an unreliable narrator who I believe is showing off rather than taking a moral stance in this story. Since he is a young boy he still shows signs of immaturity which represents his youth. His attitude towards the girls who walk in the store, the customers in the shop, and his actions lead readers to believe that he made certain decisions based off an immoral stance. While the main character believes that he is taking a moral stance, based on textual evidence, he is not doing so. Sammy’s intention with the girls are expressed through his reaction when he first saw them walk in.
In the reading of The Round House, by Louise Erdrich, the characters are at conflict with their inability to leverage jurisdiction due to their identity as native Americans. Bazil’s null efforts to attain jurisdiction for Geraldine’s rape case illustrates how even our core moral values can be devaluated to identity. The way in which Bazil’s authority is addressed, giving him false illusionary power, shows that regardless of occupation, being a native American gives you much less power. One illustration of this illusionary power would be when Joe states, “I had imagined that my father decided great questions of the law, that he worked on treaty rights, land restoration, that he looked murderers in the eye, that he frowned while witnesses stuttered and silences clever lawyers with a slice of injury”
Character Analysis When thinking of families most of the time its people you grew up with, and the culture you grew around. The story " A Pair of Tickets" () draws on what family and culture do to family 's and more importantly one person. June grows up in America where the culture to her is more familiar than that of her Chinese parents. While growing up she thought countless of times that the ways of her mother where strange and embarrassing, and at time she didn’t think of herself as truly to her heritage. Throughout the story June goes through different stages of grief, and finding herself when she truly thought she wasn’t a part of a culture.
Take eight troubled teenagers and one instructor and put them in the woods together for nine weeks and there’s bound to be a lot of drama and trouble. When those eight teenagers decide to go it alone and ditch their instructor, the drama and conflict just doubles. This book is called Downriver by the author Will Hobbs. The four main characters in the movie, Gu Li, Lin Xiao, Nan Xiang, Tang Wan, the friendship between them begun from the high school, and continued to now.
Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is an interesting children’s picture book. The main character is a little boy named Max, who has a wild imagination. He uses all five senses as well as thought and his actions to express his personality as well as how he reacts and interacts with his surroundings. Max’s id, ego and super-ego are greatly shown in this book through the way that the author has portrayed him. Not only is this book a children’s story, but it can also be perceived as a life lesson.
“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors. First her mom saw how on the television a three-year-old boy can name all the capitals of the states and foreign countries and would even pronounce it correctly. Her mom would quiz Jing Mei on capitals of certain places, only to discover that
