Xie is a mother, a sister, and a grandmother to 4 children and 13 grandchildren. She was born in the winter of 1953 at a local province where the majority of the people are farmers. Till her mid-40s she immigrated to the US, in search of a better opportunity for her and her family. Xie was born to a dependent mother and strict father. Being the oldest of the five, Xie carried a burden for setting up correct role models for the rest of her siblings. During this time, education was only reserved for the elite and for males. Being a woman in the lower class society meant that woman is entitled to be housewives and to help out in the family. As a result of this, Xie was not able to receive an education and was forced to into labor. Her mother tried to enroll her in school however she was rejected many times because woman that went to school were those of high class.

By 1980s, Xie sought a new path, she opened a store. Business at the store was quite successful. During the 30 years change, education was changed for not only for boys but for girls. However, the only downside to this was that it was not free. Xie knew the difficulties of illiteracy. She encouraged her children to go to school. This was hard for Xie because tuition during this time was expensive. This, however, did not stop Xie and her husband. They worked extra hard to be able to provide for their children, giving them a better future.
By the 2000s, Xie, and her husband immigrated to the US, in search for a better opportunity. The process of immigration was extremely complicated, yet it was so exciting. The couple and the children didn’t know what to expect. The anticipation and eagerness are all shown through their eyes. Every one of them has a dream of what to become and they knew that this place is the place where dreams can come true. It is America, a land of hope and opportunity.
