Duke Kahanamoku was an Olympic surfer from Hawaii, he was born August 24, 1890 in the Kalia District of Honolulu. Kahanamoku introduced surfing to the world after it almost died out with other local Hawaiian traditions in the nineteenth century. European people came to Hawaii around 1778 and adored the traditions of the native people and quickly joined in riding the waves on flat boards. Christian missionaries later had the local Hawaiians believe that surfing was uncivilized and tried to ban the sport. Disease it the island with great power, taking the population rom 300,000 to 40,000 in 1893.

In the past, Tyler the creator’s much of music has been ostracized from a large portion of the Hip Hop community. His first three projects were labeled by Hip Hop fans as, weird or mad. The Choju Jinbutsu Giga or otherwise known as “The Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans” is a series of scrolls that were originally preserved in the Kozanji temple in Kyoto, Japan. These scrolls, or Emaki-mono (絵巻物), which are national treasures, are kept in the temple today, but what is kept in the temple is merely a reproduction of the original collection. The original scrolls are now preserved in the Tokyo National Museum and the Kyoto National Museum respectively. The first two scrolls are kept in the Tokyo National Museum and the latter two scrolls are kept in the Kyoto National Museum. There is a collection of four scrolls total, each one created on Washi paper with traditional Japanese ink (墨), a technique called Ehonsumiga(絵本墨画).

Yakuza’s impacts on Japan’s society In Japan’s history up till today, we often see many news involving Yakuza’s activities in the society. Some famous Yakuza organisations are Yamaguchi-gumi, Sumiyoshi-kai and the Inagawa-kai. The Yamaguchi-gumi is the largest Yakuza organization in Japan with members up to 40,000 and Sumiyoshi-kai coming in second with 12,000 and Inagawa-Kai with 10,000.
I recently read the novel Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden and found that the theme of appearance versus reality is very prominent. Many characters come across as much different than they are in reality, like Nobu, a seemingly grouchy man, and Hatsumomo, an outwardly beautiful geisha. Hatsumomo, the resident geisha in the okiya, is famous for being beautiful, but infamous by those who know her well, for having a bad attitude. In Chiyo’s first glimpse of her, she sees how beautiful she is, commenting on the beautiful kimono that and is wearing, and that “her clothing wasn’t the only thing extraordinary about her” (Golden, 36).
