The Yellow Wallpaper Reflective Journal The short story ‘’ The Yellow Wallpaper’’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman depicts how the narrator in the story is suffering from a psychiatric condition and has been brought to a colonial mansion for the summer by her husband who is also a physician (as described by the narrator) tending to her illness. The story tells us how the narrator’s desires to write and do anything active are suppressed by her husband however the narrator finds a way around it and starts to maintain a secret journal which can be proven from the text since the story is in the form of a diary. There are numerous instances in the text that suggest the mansion is not what it seems to be, for example when the narrator says that the windows are barred for the little children, and there are rings and things in the walls (). This makes me believe that the mansion is a psychiatric asylum since no normal house would have bars on windows and restraining devices on the walls even if children used to live there. Another few instances would be when the narrator describes the wallpaper to be stripped off in great patches all around the head of the narrator as far as she could reach and she also mentioned that the floor was scratched and gouged and splintered, the plaster dug out (). These few examples make it possible for me to think that it really is a psychiatric asylum for psychiatric patients and there were other patients before the narrator who were admitted there and tried to escape the establishment that’s the reason they have bars, rings and things on the walls, stripped wallpaper and stripped and gouged floors.
