The world begins to slowly blink out of existence, and no one can do anything but sit and watch. This apocalyptic story, “You, Disappearing,” by Alexandra Kleeman, shows the helplessness people feel when they can’t control death. The protagonist of the story goes through what their everyday life is now since the world is ending express as: “The apocalypse was quiet. It had a way about it, a certain charm. It could be called graceful. It was taking a long time.” (Kleeman 1) Kleeman had given the devastating event a certain personality to it, it was mysterious, it was unforgiving, and it was out of everyone's control, but there was a certain allurement to it, death is a fascination to a lot of people. Mrs. Mallard is a frail woman that has to rely on her husband, who was supposedly killed in a train accident. At first, Mrs. Mallard is sad that her husband that she loved was now dead. After thinking about, however, Mrs. Mallard see that now that she doesn’t have to stand behind a man anymore and now could have her freedom to do what she never had before. As she begins to walk downs stairs from where she was, Mr. Mallard walks in the front door surprising everyone, especially Mrs. Mallard who died when she saw him. Chopin ends the story with: “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease- of joy that kills” (Chopin 3), the people around her had thought that she had died of happiness of seeing her husband. In reality, she had died from a broken heart seeing that she was never free and she had gotten her hopes up.
