You New Ideas: Non Offensive Language

Key Themes: Two readings from my developmental disabilities class we read was a list of words that showed non offensive language that we as people would use instead of offensive language towards the individuals who have disabilities. In this video I heard more of the offensive language being used rather than the non-offensive language. Some of the offensive language that was used in the video that I noticed was words like retard, stupid, special needs etc. When they used these words in the video I was not happy at all and at the same time it also made me really uncomfortable. One of the first things I thought of was seeing the living conditions that these patients were living in. When they showed the inside of the facility I realized I have never seen anything like that before. Due to the conditions in the facility and how poorly they are has to deal with the lack of staffing and organization for the patients. With the family involvement in this video I started to realize and think why all these patients’ families would think that a facility like this was the right place for them or if it was really the right thing to send them away to get help. These families didn’t get the education they needed on these topics, which then led the doctors to send them in the wrong direction by telling these families they need to send their children away. The staff at Willow brook I assumed would have been trained better to take care of the patients. Since they were so unprepared to help the patients and also inadequate to treat them was actually new information to me. Since I have worked with students with disabilities throughout my life I have learned to be more cautious of what I say and act around everyone. By taking this class I am gaining more knowledge about how to develop relationships with individuals who have disabilities and how to act around them. In this class I have learned about what language I should use that is considered appropriate and then the language that is considered offensive. We as a class each has been asked to keep a journal log where we record any type of offensive language that we hear in the news, and everyday lives. By having our professor do this I have really realized how some people can be inconsiderate towards other people around
