In these protests, students would stand outside of their school with picket signs protesting the racist actions within their schools, as well as calling for freedom of speech and the hiring of Mexican American teachers. These protests by students were one of the first major protests by Mexican Americans against racism and helped greatly to ignite the Chicano Movement. (Muñoz) Rodolfo Gonzales addresses the importance of these youthful students and their actions in his speech with the words “…we need actions such as the ‘blowouts,’ because the youth are not afraid of anything. Because the youth are ready to move. The whole party will be based on the actions of the youth, and the support of the old.”
In the memoir, We Took the Streets by Miguel “Mickey” Melendez recounts the histories of the highly controversial activist group, the Young Lords and their battle for social equality for Puerto Ricans and Latinos in New York City. As a founding member of the group, Melendez gives an unprecedented historical perspective into the efforts of a marginalized community during the late 1960’s, anxious for equal economic, social and political status. The contributions of The Young Lords are vital to history because they demonstrate how a group of individuals bonded by a common objective can produce change through conflict and resistance. Chicana/o was positioned between indigenism and indigeneity because it emerged from various forms of creativity and political face during the Chicano movement. In addition, it was established following redeployment of different tools from the initiative of the previous indigenism but having different goals and motives as well as the outcome (Rios, 2013). During the late stages of artistic development, pictorial presentations of the indigeneity have been openly embraced by Mexico. It has been widely used as a means of declaring the voice of independence.

In traditional Mexican heritage backgrounds, “a boy of sixteen was ready to assume responsibilities of family and a life in the community.” (Savage, pg. 397) Whereas a boy of sixteen in an American heritage background, his adolescence was sought out to be prolonged. Not knowing which culture to side with, these zoot-suiters rebelled to both cultures, and one act of rebellion was their outrageous clothing which was a flag of dishonor. Zoot-suiter’s many acts of rebellion and their un-American views made it impossible for them to be socially constructed in the same way white teenagers.
In the Chicano movement art was used through murals and poems to combat racism. The poem “I am Joaquin” was used to “exemplify the Chicano faith and strength of their community” (Quest for a Home Land). This was a tool to combat racism through the use of creative writing, thus showing the peaceful manner of the Chicano movement. The murals created by Chicano community exemplified their struggle in an Anglo American society and peaceful beauty of their culture that was once thought to be “savage and violent” (Mann, 15). In history our ancestor’s artistic expression was similar to the Chicano art to show our strength and pride of who we are, but early historians showed it as something “violent and uncultured” (Jackson, 10/20/15).
I gained some insight from this piece of artwork. I chose to start with this video due to my background knowledge on the Virgin of Guadalupe. However, I obtained so much more knowledge after viewing this. The thing that was most striking to me was when Juan Diego presented his cloak to the bishop, not only did the requested roses fall, but also the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Next, I observed the Sun Stone documentary.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is a worldly known work of art; Jeanette Favrot Peterson questions the meaning of this iconic symbol in her article The Virgin of Guadalupe: Symbol of Conquest or Liberation? Peterson argues that this symbol is not only of religious connotation but of political value to freedom as well. Furthermore, paraphrasing her claims, that it was not until the nineteenth and twentieth century’s did the image reach its fullest potential of bringing together a fragmented people and become known as the “Mother of Mexicans.” The legend says that Juan Diego was visited by the Virgin on the hill of Tepeyacac and that she sent a message with him that she wanted a church built in her name, only after the third visit was he able to convince
The Orlando Museum of Art, also known as OMA, is a hub of Central Florida when it comes to pulling in remarkable works of art for the public eye to pay patronage to. Today I visited such a place for the annual Antiques Vintage and Garden Show, which took place between February 19th through the 21st. Included in the price of a ticket was also admission to The OMA’s current exhibitions, which included Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers and their other running exhibits, which contained an array of work, ranging from Pre-Columbian sculptures to more contemporary works of the 21st century. The specific exhibit which held my interest most was the Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican gallery titled “A Trek from North to South”, which was organized by geographic locations in Latin America. Injustice and inequality often ignite the sparks of social and political movements. The Chicano (Mexican-American) and Puerto Rican movements of the 1900s provide such examples. Latinos are often considered a homogeneous and involved political subsection or as Beltrán describes a ‘sleeping giant.’ The metaphor describes a sleeping giant who contains much political control through its sheer size but does little with its power. Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans have historically proven this metaphor wrong and mobilized in great numbers to affect real change within their respective communities.
In modern society, guns are seen as a form of control. Those who have guns are able to overpower those who do not. This trend was set when guns were first invented and has stayed the same throughout history. The one place where guns are not a symbol of power and control is in literature, specifically “The Old Gun” and Hamilton. In Mo Yan’s short story “The Old Gun”, the protagonist is a hungry boy who does not even know how to use the titular firearm.
“Honor,” one of the qualities that guns represent, is a socially constructed factor that can be used to differentiate class. “Human triumph over nature” is a literal presentation of humans supposed ability to dominate nature, and “individual protection” is a means of maintaining one’s socioeconomic status. The Great Gatsby soundtrack for the movie The Great Gatsby was chosen perfectly to represent the main themes of the 20s in America, specifically the chase for the American Dream, unprecedented prosperity, decadence, idealism, and the empty pursuit of pleasure. Modern songs were put to a jazz-like tone to create an atmosphere similar to the 20s. These songs can directly be heard as coming from a specific character’s point of view, in particular Daisy’s and Gatsby’s. The song “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray encompasses the main themes of decadence and idealism represented through the characters Daisy and Gatsby in the novel The Great Gatsby.
The story The Guest, by Albert Camus, read on page 381 of Perrine’s Literature textbook,contains many symbols. Perrine describes symbols as “Something that means more than what it suggests on the surface. ”pg 300. The first of many symbols in this story are the guns.
