When examining Sarah Jones's ‘Your Revolution’, it is seen as having been inspired and intended to deflate common hip-hop hits of previous decades to show Jones’ dissent towards masculinist aspects of hip-hop. Jones can be seen through the poem as being eager to talk about her side to “embarrass her audience for listening to songs that objectify women as toys” (College of Charleston Blogs, 2013). Jones manages to do this by taking previous hip-hop hits with their negative and sexist opinions of women and converting them into her own poem where she defends women against the previous lyrics with the new ones. A Charleston College blog states, “Much like poets of the Black Arts Movement, Jones demands something more of poetry than the pleasing rhymes and rhythms of traditional art; she calls for meaning, purpose, and raw emotion behind poetry even if it disturbs the audience” (College of Charleston Blogs, 2013). The irony found was that the FCC didn’t attempt to ban the songs Jones copied from and which was the real cause for her poem being so indecent. Jones was later able to successfully sue the FCC, “Because they couldn’t prove what was indecent about my poem” Jones went on to say (Martinez, 2009). This shows how sexist people can be due to the lyrics Jones copied off of objectifying women in a negative view and being praised for their work, and Jones taking that and showing others that it is not okay and having the FCC attempt to ban her words and silence
