Zebulon Vance's Analysis

Zebulon Vance, who would become known as “North Carolina’s Civil War Governor” (Osment 2008), was born on May 13, 1830 in the hills of Buncombe County, and attended law school at the University of North Carolina. A talented debater, Vance entered the political arena at the age of 24 and was elected to a seat in the United States Congress by the age of 28 (Osment 2008). Vance was an avid unionist until the civil war began. At that point, Vance changed his stance, took up the Confederate cause, and responded by organizing a group for battle known as the “Rough and Ready Guard” (Architect of the Capitol 2014). After serving in battle, Vance was elected Governor while the Civil War was still being fought. Despite North Carolina residents being divided at that time, Vance was successful at maintaining unity in the state and he worked ardently to insure legal protections to North Carolinians (Architect of the Capitol 2014). Additionally, during his time as governor, he diligently sought for development of better schools, and “worked” to strengthen North Carolina’s industry, agriculture and economy (Architect of the Capitol 2014). Vance ultimately served three terms, and passed away during his fourth term, in the U.S. Senate (Osment 2008). …show more content…

His military service is evidence that he cared deeply enough for the well-being of North Carolina that he was willing to sacrifice his life for his state. Comparatively, he used his talents and intelligence to better North Carolina on the political front. Economy, agriculture, industry, and schools are still important to North Carolinians. Patriotism and dedicated service, like that of Zebulon Vance, are qualities citizens hope to find in a leader
