Firstly, general Zaroff has a very attractive and compelling presence which masks his evil nature. After Rainsford knocks on the door and it opens general Zaroff immediately shakes Rainsford’s hand to make him feel welcome. At first general Zaroff seems like a kind, intelligent and pleasant man. The narrator says, “Rainsford’s first impression was that the man was singularly handsome; his second was that there was an original, almost bizarre quality about the general’s face” (Connell 4). This statement indicates that since the general was very handsome it makes Rainsford feel very welcome.

To the people of Sighet, it was a rule to dislike the needy, a group of peoples whom the townsfolk shared few similarities. An exception however was Moishe the Beadle, a man unique in the fact that he doesn’t fall under the stereotypes of any common group. His noninvasive and shy demeanor evokes an inviting feeling and causes those around him to smile. These personality traits separate Moishe from the dullness of others and distinguished him as a potential mentor for Elie to have. The use of imagery and other descriptive vocabulary brings to light Moishe’s role as Elie’s master, and also highlights him as a complex character.
How does one man go from a bright and dashing young man, to a drab lifeless one? Frank Shabata in O’ Pioneers! had this transformation, all because of two young people’s choices. Frank caught his wife, Marie, committing adultery in his orchard late at night with a young man Emil. He shot and killed them on the spot, then was sentenced and sent to the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. Willa Cather did not send Frank to the State Penitentiary merely because it was the closest prison, but for a reason with more significance.
The end of the year was approaching and on the “eve of Rosh Hashanah” (66) tension was growing in the camp. The daily evening meal came but no one would eat it until after prayer had taken place. We often encourage people to actively pursue their happiness while also wanting to discourage them to escape from reality. However, avoiding your issues is also a way of pursuing happiness, even though this route will prove to be temporary. In the literary piece, “Horses of the Night” by Margaret Laurence, the author describes the story of a boy named Chris, who, due to his financial conditions, is forced to move from his home in Shallow Creek to dwell in Manawaka, in order to attend high school. Chris’ character is used to demonstrate the idea that individuals may escape from the miserable aspects of their lives in order to stay happy. Through the course of this work, you witness the changes Chris undergoes, through the eyes of his six-year-old cousin Vanessa, which ultimately lead to his downfall.
Initially, prior to Sighet’s Jewish community deportation to Auschwitz, Elizer’s faith in his God is absolute; he is profoundly religious. As Moishe the Beadle questions him about his aim in praying God, Elie is troubled: “Why did I pray? […] Why did I live? Why did I breathe?” (Wiesel 4).

The position of women in the societies of Genesis and the Odyssey grant them little power. Despite the pervasive gender hierarchy present in the ancient texts, Rebekah and Nausicaa wield their intelligence and wit to influence those around them. These two women utilize deception and indirect communication in order to alter the lives of prominent men as their means of exerting control within their patriarchal society. Due to their actions, these women become essential to the narratives of Genesis and the Odyssey, for Rebekah is integral to the perpetuation of God’s covenant through familial lineage and Nausicaa is fundamental to Odysseus’ nostos journey.
The Roman Empire was one of the most effective civilizations of all time. Their culture, lifestyle, religion and the s tate burecratic system could be considered as a new order for that time.
