After reading the novel Twisted, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, I have become more aware of how different emotions and attitudes that people have can positively or negatively affect how they’re viewed by society. Furthermore, an individual’s attitudes and actions can also change their perspective of the world and the quality of their life. Early on in the book, we are introduced to the main character Tyler, who is an emotional, unpopular, and insecure seventeen year old senior who is hoping for things to change. Throughout the story, we follow his emotional rollercoaster filled with his thrilling highs and devastating lows. After researching astrology signs and their true meanings about specific traits, I have decided that Tyler fits within the Cancer symbol.

Suyuan’s Heroism The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan affects the relationship of four mothers and their daughters. Throughout their journeys of figuring out one another, they each learned a new quality about themselves. “The Hero’s Adventure,” written by Joseph Campbell, demonstrates how a person goes through a cycle to be claimed as a hero for another person who needs saving. Tan’s novel describes how each of the heroes went through all four phases of the hero's journey.
Apparently the time you are born predetermines your personality with a corresponding zodiac sign. If this is true, then why are there people who do not fit within the characteristics of the sign, or like Grendel have characteristics from all signs? In the his novel, Grendel, John Gardner incorporates each chapter of the book with a distinct astrological sign, to display the growth and withdraw in Grendel's philosophical development. The different zodiacs in each chapter are parallel to Grendel’s spiritual evolution, constantly seeking to understand the world around him and himself. Through the chapters of the book, it can be seen that all zodiac animals are interdependent of each other, and this tears Grendel apart emotionally.
Throughout the novel The Joy Luck Club, Jing-Mei Woo struggles with her sense of identity and belonging in a community as she is often embarrassed of her heritage, and prefers to live her life in the shadows. However, at the end of the book, Jin-mei finds peace when she seeks her roots and sisters in China. She finally finds her inner Chinese that she described is “in your blood waiting to be let go” (Tan 306). The idea of respect is like a cycle. If you do not give it then you will not receive it and vice versa. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan is a contemporary novel which explains the story of four chinese immigrant mothers and their daughters. In Chinese tradition, the children show respect and loyalty to their parents no matter what happens. In return, the parents give the children the respect they deserve.

As seen by the mothers’ and daughters’ behavior towards each other in The Joy Luck Club, it is difficult to preserve one’s culture when one is exposed to a new environment or country. With a difference of two distinct generations between them, the four main pairs often come across cultural collisions. Other than facing the age gap, these mothers and daughters also have to deal with a language and communication barrier. Already, at the beginning of the story, Jing-Mei Woo is able to understand how the mothers of the “Joy Luck Club” are displeased with their daughter’s rejection of their Chinese culture. She speaks to herself, admitting that “they are frightened.

Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club is an amazing representation of what Chinese immigrants and their families face. The broad spectrum of the mothers’ and daughters’ stories all connect back to a couple of constantly recurring patterns. These patterns are used to show that how the mothers and daughters were so differently raised affected their relationships with each other, for better and for worse. To begin with, the ever-present pattern of disconnect between the two groups of women is used to show how drastically differently they were raised.

Suyuan and Jing-mei was one of the mother-daughter pair who wants to fulfill their dreams in America.
In The Joy Luck Club, written by Amy Tan, we are introduced to Suyuan and her daughter Jing-Mei “June” Woo. As with any relationship, there is conflict between Suyuan Woo and her daughter, as it seems that Jing-Mei doesn’t understand her mother’s Chinese culture and ambitions. In the Chinese culture, women are seen as inferior and often lack basic rights such as the right to marriage or financial holdings, thus deprived of their potential. This is why the rights in the U.S. are seen as privileges to Chinese women, among other minorities, and why Suyuan endeavored for her daughter to become a prodigy and excel in anything and everything. Yet as Jing-Mei was forced into this ideal, and the more her mother tried to enforce this idea, the further she begun to despise her mother for attempting to turn her into a “fraud”.
Hence, why it would make sense of her if she decides to signal her lover with the tiger behind. In the text, it says, “And not only did she know in which room stood the lady ready to emerge, all blushing and radiant, should her door be opened, but she knew who the lady was. It was one of the fairest and loveliest of the damsels of the court who had been selected as the reward of the accused youth should he be proved innocent of the crime of aspiring to one so far above him, and the princess hated her.” (Stockton, 597). The princess hated the damsel because she thinks that the damsel likes her lover, and believes that if her lover saw her, he would like her back.
Cultural Analysis of China The definition of culture is; the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; the characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time. Mainland China has a rich and prosperous culture which dates back more than 4,000 years, which is full of Chinese culture and history. China has a colorful history, which focuses on more traditional aspects like food, customs, and the life style of its people. The Chinese people have shared a common culture longer than any other group of people on earth.
