1) Three elements that are of great importance to a successful screenplay are sex, patriotism, and violence. These three elements are what brings in the audience to the movies. Sex is an element which sells very well and has a huge audience already. For instance, the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is surrounded by sex and captivates a huge audience to come in the theatre. Patriotism is also a great element because the audience is already rooting for somebody in the film. Patriotism also drives the the plot of the screenplay/film. Violence is also of great importance to a screenplay because it says a lot about the film and the characters. Violence also keeps the audience engaged in the screenplay or film. An example from a film we have read in class is in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when the Superposse present themselves while Butch and his group are robbing the train. The Superposse begins to chase Butch and Sundance, which causes them to run away. The rising action is the events that build up to the climax that happens after the inciting incident. An example of rising action in the film Slumdog Millionaire would be when Salim repeatedly betrays his brother Jamal. The climax is the highest point of tension in the film. For instance in Slumdog Millionaire the climax is when Jamal meets with the girl in the train station after he answers his last question of the game show. Get Out (2017) is a horror film directed and written by Jordan Peele. The film is about a black male named Chris, performed by Daniel Kaluuya, who is going out of town with his girlfriend Rose, performed by Allison Williams. The purpose of this trip is to meet her parents for the first time at their estate located deep into the woods. Little does Chris know Rose’s parents do not really care to meet him but are more interested in auctioning off his body. Chris figures this out towards the end of the film and he barley figures out a way to escape.
I find that nowadays, filmmakers are taking bigger risks than in the past. They’re becoming bolder, and impressing a group’s beliefs onto their audiences. Climax is when a series of events and clauses build up to a point of unbearable dramatic tension leading to a pivotal turning point. Chappele and his friend Chip, which he mentioned was a “white guy”, were smoking marijuana in New York city, and the two happened to be lost. Unexpectedly a police car pulls up behind their car. The two were shocked by this. However, Chip made the ill-advised decision to get out of the car and, “ Ask them for directions ”.
Something about the darkness and evil of violence gets their attention. For example, most of the top grossing movies of all time each include a side of violence. In Filmsite.org’s article ‘ALL-TIME BOX-OFFICE TOP 100 FILMS’, the following movies are listed in the top: Avatar, Jurassic World, The Star Wars Franchise, and The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. These films, some of the highest (world) grossing movies of all time are all centered around and focused on using one crucial piece of storytelling, violence. As we saw in Macbeth, Shakespeare surrounds his story around violence.
In the exposition or introduction, you are introduced to characters, the setting, and the problem. In the exposition of the Scooby Doo episode “The Beast is Awake in Bottomless Lake”, the gang goes to Canada to find a place to camp. The gang includes Scooby Doo; the talking dog, Shaggy; the guy who is with Scooby at all times, Velma; the brains of the gang, as well as Daphne and Fred who are usually the ones who help Velma. In this episode they also run into Mr. LeBeav who owns the gas station, Mr. Taylor who is there to go fishing by himself, and Julie Johnson, the daughter of the owner of the grocery store. However, things don’t go as planned and they run into a hideous monster that is causing problems.
The Bronze Screen introduced both positive and negative portrayals of Latinas and Latinos in film. While there are plenty of positive Latino roles in films, Latinos and Latinas should be included in more positive roles because the negative roles Latinos have in films cause negative stereotypes. Positive and negative representations of Latinos in films has always fluctuated throughout history, however the more negative ones seem to always overpower the good ones. The film, “The Bronze Screen”, gave many examples of the negative roles Latinos played in films throughout film history. Early films included Latino actors, however they did not always have a lead role or even a positive one.
The following line from The Florida Project best sums up the film: “You know why this is my favourite tree? Cause it’s tipped over and it’s still growing.” Spoken by Moonee while eating jelly sandwiches with Jancey on the trunk of a lush, collapsed tree, the line draws a perfect similarity between the fallen tree’s continued growth and the motel residents’ efforts to trudge through poverty despite their representations in society. Sean Baker’s The Florida Project depicts Moonee, a six-year old living at the Magic Castle (a dilapidated motel just outside Walt Disney World) with her unemployed mother Halley.
The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
Individuality is unaccepted and isolated from our society that embraces conformed values. The Copy Shop and L’homme sans tete are examples of short films that reflect this ironic problem of society where individuals are not identified with their individual morals, but conformed morals enforced by society. The 2001 short film, Copy Shop by Virgil Widrich conveys the idea of conformity. This is done foremost through the metaphor of 'copies' that fill up the film's world that represent conformity, where the composer satirises our society which is filled up by 'copies' of individuals sharing conformed ideals.
In the wildly popular Mexican film, Los olvidados (1950), Spanish director Luis Buñuel exposes the harsh realities of life in Mexico during the 1950’s. Luis Buñuel’s work on Los olvidados portrays a societal loss for all hope due to crime and violence as an infinitely vicious cycle, coupled with addressing the lack of reform for dilapidated living conditions throughout Mexico. In Los olvidados, Buñuel follows Pedro (Alfonso Mejía) a neglected bastard, and El Jaibo (Roberto Cobo) the leader of a gang of homeless children loitering in vacant lots. In the film Extreme Measures someone can find ideas of Secular Ethics throughout the film involving Utilitarianism and its basic tenets along with Kantian analysis. The basic tenets of Utilitarianism include the principle of utility, Hedonism, and the viewpoint of a disinterested and benevolent spectator. While the tenets of Kantian Ethics, which include good will, the formula of universal law, the formula of the end itself, and the categorical imperative. These basic ideas setup arguments for and against the Utilitarian ideas set up by doctor Myrick. In the film doctor Myrick makes the claim that it is worth the deaths of unwilling subjects in order to help/save the lives of millions.
