Frontiers In History: Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor was a devastating and destructive attack that killed more than 2,300 Americans. Tensions were growing between Japan and the United States, and after many long months, their problems led to a deadly surprise attack. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States Naval Base in Oahu, Hawaii, which was Pearl Harbor. The Japanese wanted to attack the U.S. before they had time to prepare for a fight, and it ended up bringing the U.S. into World War II. The attack of Pearl Harbor caused a great number of American men and women deaths, along with destruction of ships and aircraft. The four other men survived, and they all gave big thanks to Joe George for saving their lives. In fact, two of the men attended the 70th USS Arizona reunion in Hawaii. Unfortunately, Joe George passed away in 1996, and he was never awarded for his bravery and courage of helping others. In 2017, the United States Navy authorized posthumous award of a combat medal to him. After just two hours, there were 21 warships sunk, over 300 airplanes destroyed, more than 2,400 Americans killed, and about 1,000 people wounded. Japan only lost a few dozen planes, several submarines, and fewer than 100 men. This surprise attack led the United States to being more united in patriotism. Most Americans realized that the attack still affected them even if they were not in Hawaii. They all came together and fought for their country. In 1962, a memorial for the USS Arizona ship was established in Pearl Harbor to honor all the innocent people who had lost their lives.
