Picture this, a new rookie defense attorney gets called into his boss’ office, worried that he did something wrong. As he enters his boss’ office, his boss begins informing him in a calm and hortatory tone that he needs to start thinking outside the box when he goes up and defends his clients. Now normally, getting called into the boss’ office would seem like a bad thing, but in this case, the boss just wanted his subordinate to do something and he didn’t have to talk to him as if he was talking to his wife. Instead, the boss talked to his subordinate in a consultative register in order to get his message across. In this essay excerpt Rodriguez had to give up speaking the comfortable language of Spanish at home and had to begin practicing English. Even though Rodriguez was disinclined to give up speaking Spanish and practicing English, whenever he was at school and spoke in English, his fellow classmate actually understood him. Rodriguez states, “One day in school, I raised my hand to volunteer an answer to a questions. I spoke out in a loud voice and I did not think it remarkable when the entire class understood.” By Rodriguez changing his language, he was more easily understood by his classmates. Again, since most of his classmates are English speakers, Rodriguez had to also speak in English to be understood, if he did not speak in English, people will not understand what he is saying.
