The depths of the Depression followed by the coming of World War II meant the end of the swing era, the end of the big band era and hard times for the Graystone. In the ’60s it was acquired by the symbol of another musical age, Motown Records. It was relatively little used, and fell into disrepair and then decay. Efforts to save the ballroom as a jazz museum were mounted. “It’s like tearing down the Eiffel Tower,” said one fan as the demolition crews went to work in 1980. The lot remains vacant to this day. | ||
