How did fashion change during and after WW2? Why were these changes so much more considerable than at any other time? These questions are just some of the many that people ask when talking about this time, and though fashion may feel insignificant, everyone wears clothes, and in some way, everyone takes part in some type of consumerism. During the 40s and ’50s, fashion underwent many changes from feminine styles to dressing more masculine ones. Rosie the Riveter, and more sustainable fashion during the 40s made consumerism in the 50s more intense than ever before. Because of how little money and time people had to spend on fashion during WW2, in the 50’s it became trendy. They introduced a bunch of new types of fabrics and prints. And this is the time when clothing actually became important to people and it’s the first time that consumerism in fashion is really seen. A lot of the industry was focused on teens, which is when dances started to emerge. This happened because teens were an easy target for consumerism because their brains weren’t fully developed and they just followed whatever latest trend they saw on TV. (The People’s History) A trend most people know about from this time is poodle skirts. These were big (usually pink) fluffy skirts sometimes with a poodle embroidered on the side. Companies really played into the rebellious teen and the “ teenager” became very popular. Though there have always been teenagers now, they weren’t just another part of life, they were an emblem of fashion, individuality, and expressing yourself.
