Women in the 1920s began to explore, and digest the newer trends within both beauty, and fashion; within this, they were able to discover what had suited them as individuals, alongside their worth as human beings. There was a decade of economic prosperity following the conclusion of World War Ⅰ. This time was called the “Roaring Twenties”, because of the ebullient, unrestrained culture of the decade. Before this era, the Victorian attitudes toward dress and etiquette were still prominent, and were the main influence on women’s clothing. Women’s bodies were fully covered, as floor-length dresses were the norm and waists were cinched, tight due to the corsets that were still an accompaniment to most women’s outfits. When the 1920’s hit, however, dresses got shorter, painful corsets were cast aside, and some women even began wearing sports clothes.

During the 1920s women gained a freedom that they had not known before. Women were wearing new and shorter fashion styles (document 4). Before the 1920s women’s fashion included floor length dresses that were usually reworn every day. Wearing the same dress every day was seen as a normality during this time and owning too many dresses could have been considered frivolous. In the 1920s however many women owned multiple dresses that they did not have to wear every day or even week.

From the “Great Gatsby” like parties, with the swing dancing, and the big rise in the stock market, to the abolishment of distributing alcohol, the 20’s were glamorous times. There were new innovated and some might say “scandalous” styles in the fashion. One of the biggest events that impacted society and the fashion in the 20’s was that women were granted the right to vote.
After World War I, women’s fashion took a turn and prospered into an exciting and new vibrant style. Society previously held tight boundaries on how women should dress. There was no law to the way they could dress, but simply that their morals were tighter and they had an unspoken, common knowledge before the 1920s of how women should dress appropriately.
Most men’s kept their clothing from the 1930s and wore them through the early ’40s war years. Tailors became skilled at repairing or repurposing double breasted suit jackets from the 1930s into single breasted jackets or sport coats. It was a sign of support for the war to be seen in your pre-war suits. Another influence for men's clothing and popular design in the 1940s was war time clothing this influenced men’s fashion design after the war by coping or modifying uniforms into civilian clothes. Using trench coats, bomber jackets, knit undershirts, pea coats, chino pants and aviator glasses all this came from World war II military clothing.
The 1920s influence is still seen in today 's culture, many people still embrace the 1920s as an age of great change and individualism. This age made woman who they are today, not only through fashion but by breaking down barriers to new forms of lifestyles not discovered by the common people. Not only was fashion used to express the rebellious lifestyle but today it is used to express who people are and where they come from as in what their occupation is as well as gender and race. Without the fashion of the 1920s fashion would be but a synonym for clothing and would have no meaning or power towards it. Women’s clothes have changed over the years especially during the 1800’s. In this time period of prince henry in England there was a very big leap in fashion as stated above they varied between nightgowns to ball gowns. For example in 1800 to 1810 the dress was a piece of fabric that looked as if to be a nightgown with long loose sleeves and the jacket of the time was a shawl. But when you got to the 1840 the dress included petti coats to shape your body in the desired way and the dress carried down to the floor and the sleeves became short and tight.
The 1920’s was a period of dramatic social and political change. More than half of America lived in cities and fashion was changing like crazy. The most familiar symbol of the “Roaring Twenties” is the flapper: a young woman with bobbed hair and short skirts who drank, and smoked, in addition to being more sexually “free” than previous generations. The world was constantly changing, not even with just prohibition or the American Dream, fashion changed forever.

In the midst of recovering from a war and preparing for the next one, women were having to save resources and take the place of men who were gone.
