Counseling Profession Challenges Regarding counseling as a profession, many challenges arise and are dealt with continuously. In my opinion, I believe one of the most important issues facing counseling is the lack of knowledge about what it entails. Within society, including media, counseling seems to be portrayed as a client laying on a couch seeking advice for problems. Not only do a large population of people believe counseling is simply advice giving, but that problems can be solved starting in the first session.
The Pursuit of Happiness Who I am today has primarily been dictated by the environment in which I have been raised. I will continue to be molded throughout my life, but now I am entering a period of my life where I will be the one deciding who I am. Today, I am not the person I want to be and not the person who many perceive me to be, but am striving to become the man I want to be. The creation of the synthetic cell is part of an effort to design a “minimal cell” containing only the most basic genome required for life. Craig Venter fully believes in this great tool as the basis for cells to efficiently produce biofuels, vaccines, drugs and other products. With synthetic genomes, we can switch out dozens or even hundreds of genes at once. And life is really good at creating complex molecules. The hope is that one day, we’ll be able to change the genomes in simple organisms so they interpret their genes as instructions to produce complex organic materials like drugs as medicine to cure people or jet fuel to alternate oil into nitrogen.
Key philosophies of the profession has developed from the Freudian view that people are basically sexual animals (Freud, 1905/1958) (Hansen, 2012), to the vision of Carl Rogers self-actualization model and vision of human strength (Rogers, 1951) (Hansen, 2012), and the behavorists theory that describe humans as basicaly computers that can be programed to change (Beck, 1976) (Hansen, 2012), counselors have witness dramatic and lasting human change. Historically, creative visons have fueled advances in counseling, not scientific discoveries (Hansen, 2012).
Issues regarding mental health have become more important than ever before because people are exposed to more stressors in life (“Become a Mental Health Counselor - 15 Must-Know Pros & Cons”). The solution starts with mental health counselors and psychologists. To further appreciate careers in counseling, one must first understand the education/training, salary/advancements, and benefits/hazards that go along with the job. Primarily, one of the most important factors in a job in counseling is the education and training required. If one chooses a career path in counseling, one first would need to obtain a two-year associate's degree while attending a junior college (“Career Outlook For Counselors”).

My reason for perusing graduate studies in this field is the growing passion I have for counseling. Growing up with a mentally ill mother wasn’t easy and caused me to harbor a lot of emotions, which I carried with me throughout my adult life. Til one day I met someone who changed my life in a positive way who gave me the motivation I needed and encourage me to become who I am today. I was a caterpillar stuck and waiting to blossom into a beautiful butterfly all I needed was that extra push that I had there all along. Everyone needs that motivation in life something to push them to be able to succeed and do well in life. I believe that everyone can change they just need that extra push, it’s crazy at the fact the human mind is so complex and intricate, that what we hear, see, and learn can affect us in many ways. I believe in change mostly because I believe someone can change who they are , I think that someone who isn't a good person is able to change who they are.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
Wellness coaching is growing rapid over the years to help improve the quality of life and breaking old habits. It is becoming an active strategy in many therapeutic fields to be used to help with prevention, health promotion, and encouraging individuals to make a change for the better (Clark, 2013). Wellness coaching is based off positive psychology to help motivate and help people to reach their goals in their health (Collins, 2009). Wellness coaching focuses on the individual’s well-being and overall health by giving the individual support, motivation, and goals to get to where the individual wants to be (Grodzki & Allen, 2005). Wellness coaches are trained to help individuals to work towards his her goals that are focused on wellness and physical health (Nelson & Shckley, 2013).
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
