Occupation is the Word that defines the occupational therapy profession, and it can use it for both ways occupation as a process or occupation as end or goals. Maybe that it will be confusing for personnel outside the profession and that’s why we need to educate and explain it every day. As clinicians, we need to clarify it in patient goals and daily documentations. Also, as managers, we need to promote our profession with occupations and their meaning for our clients. When we use occupation as a goal is simpler to everyone else accept their obvious meaning.

Occupational Therapy is the Career for Me For most of my childhood I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian or a nurse. I knew from the beginning that I had a heart for helping people and animals. Once I was in high school my dream of becoming a veterinarian and nurse slowly disappeared, but I still knew I wanted a career that focused on helping people though. That is when I started researching different types of careers that were in the health field and I stumbled upon occupational therapy.
The career that I am interested in pursuing is that of a patient representative. I am currently on track, educationally, to pursue this career. With the help of the personality and traits questionnaire I was able to learn what is expected of a patient representative and if my personality is compatible with this profession. Becoming a patient representative will open doors to other career goals that I have. Kaplan University Career Services will be beneficial to me when it is time to create a resume and practice job interviews.
Journal #1: My Thoughts on Becoming a Mental Health Counselor The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the views of becoming a mental health counselor. Although there are many professions to choose from, I decided a mental health counselor with a specialized area in women’s health and domestic violence is my true calling. Tiffany Rush-Wilson Ph. D. stated, “That if we are in this field is because we have a true passion and the seed to do this type of work” (Laureate, 2012).
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
I loved seeking to uncover the underlying mechanisms that drove human behavior. One of the things that I appreciated most about psychology was the wide range of applications that it had. I felt I had a lot of options that sound like fantastic careers. I was interested in exploring the other career paths that were available with a psychology degree. I was drawn to the idea of using my knowledge of human behavior to work in areas like therapy, education, or social services.
