Essay #1: Describe why you wish to enroll at WMed. You should describe any connection you have to southwest Michigan. I would love to stay in Michigan and I appreciate that Kalamazoo is a large city with only a forty-minute drive to Lake Michigan beaches. Not to mention that WMed is the only Michigan-based medical school to be voted one of the 50 Most Beautiful Medical Schools. It is also a new institution which allows for innovation by its students.
The position also is a segue into my current educational goals, which are geared toward a Human Services Degree. Over the past twelve years I have worked in the health care field. While working in the various jobs I have had several administrative assistant duties, which included patient intake, data entry/analysis, inventory management, etc. As previously stated, this position consists of patient care and administrative both are predominant in my career growth. I am a registered nurse and currently hold an associates degree. I am actively enrolled in TESU working towards my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) which is the degree most employers seek when hiring nurses. Once I have earned my BSN, which will be in the summer of 2016, my plan is to then take certain certification courses. I am very passionate about learning wound, ostomy and incontinence care (WOC) and will take the classes and state exams I need to earn my certification shortly after graduating TESU. Wound, ostomy and incontinence care needs are growing, especially in the home care setting, and this will allow me to apply for positions that are more tailored to what I wish to specialize in.
As I researched what kind of careers would interests me, I discovered nursing brought these two worlds that I love together. My clinical experience is diverse. I had the opportunity to work in various well known hospitals in the greater Boston area. During my preceptorship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on the acute psychiatric unit, I managed up to 6 patients with a wide variety of psychiatric disorders along with managing their medical conditions.
As a nurse I will develop the leadership skills and competence to uphold the commitment I made to make a differences in the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. In my career as a Nurse Practitioner I will do all I can to assist individuals and their families in recognizing, without stigma, the value of psychiatric assistance during times of stress and
and intrigued by the mind-body connection as well as the importance of human activity and occupation in maintaining mental and physical well-being. At the same time, my desire to work directly with people and be able to make a positive and lasting change to their lives by empowering them and helping discover their strengths and confidence in themselves to achieve their goals, led me to a realization that a career in occupational therapy would be a perfect fit for me. To me occupational therapy is a dynamic, rewarding, challenging, and inspiring field where I can fully realize my skills and knowledge. Having always been a firm believer in the patient-centric approach, I am passionate about providing excellent service to patients by improving their performance, preventing illness and disability and promoting adaptation to life
Occupational therapy saved my family. Growing up with a sister with severe spastic cerebral palsy to include both cognitive and functional deficits, life existed on a day to day, hour by hour basis, as we were unsure of challenges each moment would bring. This all changed the moment occupational therapy brought quality of life back to me and my family. My very personal experience defined my purpose to become an occupational therapist, to pay the gift given my family forward.
I am an experienced hardworking, reliable and motivated Senior Nurse. I lead by example and thrive on challenges. I am able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and this is evident when working well within the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). I have worked in Alder Hey children’s Hospital for fourteen years, working initially within the Oncology unit for eight years were I acquired a vast knowledge of sepsis.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
I wish to explore other settings such as residential care facilities and schools. Not only are these experiences valuable to my career but they are important tasks while searching for a job. With additional practice and surveillance I learn about the industry’s prospects and etiquette. I am able to ask questions, examine opportunities and become directly exposed to the tasks catered by the OT’s. My long-term goals consist of owning a license and beginning to work in either a hospital setting for pediatric healthcare or inpatient rehabilitation.
I just completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and look forward to exploring nursing theory, evidence-based practice and leadership even further in the advance practice curriculum. I am pursuing family nurse practitioner because it will allow me to be more versatile in my nursing skills and serve a larger patient population. There has been a focus on primary care medicine since the Affordable Care Act; resulting in a larger need for nurse practitioners required to care for this patient population. I have been granted an opportunity to advance my career and I am more than ready to take on the added responsibilities and handle treatment plans autonomously, as well as learning additional skills such as diagnosing and prescribing medications. By obtaining my graduate level education my clinical judgment would be enhanced to improve safety, quality of care and patient outcomes substantially.
Prior to beginning this volunteer experience, I believed that I had a number of personal attributes and skills that fit this role such as having the necessary education about people, specifically older people if to work with elderly. As part of my college course, I have studied and learned about the development of people from conception to death, including how elderly people may act, think and perceive. All the knowledge I’ve attained from the lectures definitely came in handy whilst working in the nursing home. The ability to deal with mental illness properly is important when working in nursing homes as many people in nursing homes are there due to some kind of mental illness such as dementia and Alzheimer’s etc. Personal skills such as compassion, patience, being helpful, motivated, having good communication skills and being a good listener too.
