The Inhumanity
Zoos all around the world are being criticized over the treatment of their captive animals. The animals are being treated unjustly everyday. By going to zoos, people are unknowingly encouraging it. Animals are mistreated in many different ways based off of their living conditions, what they eat, and so much more. These things can lead to behavioural and physical health issues in both the animals and/or visitors. Many people believe that zoos should be closed and the animals should be released back into their natural habitat. Furthermore, all animals that do not need medical treatment should be released back into the wild because zoos are doing more harm than good. These animals lives are getting shorter and there is a higher infant mortality rate, they are developing more behavioural issues, and the visitors and animals are more probable to contract diseases.

These factors can include their diet, habitat, or simply by catching diseases from other animals or humans. In the article, “10 Facts About Zoos”, it is stated that, “40% of lion cubs die before one month of age. In the wild, only 30% of cubs are thought to die before they are six months old and at least a third of those deaths are due to factors which are absent in zoos, like predation.” For example, elephants can develop major problems in their feet since they are not used to living in such small spaces and are not able to walk as much as they need to. In this paper, “The New York Times article repeatedly said animals living in zoo enclosures experience high infant mortality rate due to the stress of not living in a proper habitat.” (Reasons to Rethink Zoos).
