Harper Lee uses symbolism to explain the idea of prejudice in the novel. She does this by letting the reader know the people of Maycomb’s feeling towards Tom Robinson with out knowing the whole story. For example, in to kill a mockingbird Tom Robinson is put to death for a crime he did not commit. This can relate to when Atticus says, “shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit tem, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. This means that it was also a sin to kill a tom Robinson.
1. The character that best exemplifies the theme of ‘prejudice’ without a doubt would have to be the 10th Juror. He bases his initial verdict on the suspect, upon the fact that he was already given a fair trial and considering that the vote was 11 to 1 in favor of guilty initially, there was no point in discussing the boy’s guiltlessness and ‘wasting his time’. Not only that, but the 10th Juror also bases his opinion on the fact that he apparently “lived among ‘em all my life” with ‘em’ referring to those types of kids.
When asked why he voted not guilty, juror eight stated “Look, this boy has been kicked around all his life. You know---living in a slum, his mother dead since he was nine. He spent a year in and a half in an orphanage while his father served a jail term for forgery. That’s not a very good head start. He’s had a pretty terrible sixteen years.
Prejudice was revealed in Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, because it is twelve angry men who have to prove whether this boy is guilty or not guilty of murder to his father. Yes, there was a lot of prejudice but the main was Ageism, upbringing along with classism. Ageism would bring how one of the jurors has a past with his son, jurors judged the kid with his past consequences, along with the upbringing of classism that would follow how the jurors judged the kid on what he looked like, where he lived and how he presented himself. Ageism displayed in this play by juror three with how he treats his own son “ he hit me in the face.
In the play Twelve Angry Men there was a man prosecuted with the stabbing his father at the chest. 12 Jurors had to decide if the boy was guilty or not, I would say he is not guilty for two main reasons. First a quote in the book stated “I think it’s logical to say that she was not wearing her eye glasses to bed, and I don’t think she put them on to casually look out the window” (page 61). This quote shows that the witness from the plaintiff could not have seen the crime happen without her glasses on. My last reasoning on why I think the boys not guilty is because Juror 5 said “ who’s ever used a switch blade befor would never stab the knife downward” (page 56).
Twelve Angry Men play depicts a realistic story of one of the few duties required if you are a U.S. citizen, serving on a jury. What is a completely private affair among strangers, is shown in a realistic case through Reginald Rose’s classic tale. When most people hear the word prejudice they often think to race, ethnicity, or gender, yet it is not always the case.
Prejudice: Sneetches, Books, and Neurology Websters defines prejudice as “a preconceived judgement or opinion.” Prejudice is taking something, someone, or somewhere and judging from an opinion or the actions of one. A good example is the classic Dr. Seuss book, The Sneetches. The star bellied Sneetches are prejudiced against the bare bellied Sneetches for their lack of a star.
Recently, in my English class, we read the novel To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. This story is about how a young girl comes to realize a few things about her community. One of the things she learns involves the social classes in her small town. She also learns that because these classes exist some people are treated differently than others. As the young girl, Scout, continues to see this behavior the reader also comes to realize how this segregation influences individuals to discriminate against the lower class.

Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are the two main people who are prejudged. There is also one other man who prejudged, Atticus Finch. All three of these men are mockingbirds.

One instance of prejudice in Twelve Angry Men occurs when Juror 12 has animosity toward the environment in which the defendant was raised. He says, "Well, it's the element. They let the kids run wild.
The juror’s emotions affected their belief by putting the boy onto the chair. Juror number 3 was convinced that the teenage boy was guilty. This was due to his past experiences within his family; the rage that he had towards his past created a very one-sided belief. Therefore, juror number 3 let his emotions choose the side he would be on. His emotions gathered up anger, frustration and family rage leading him to ignore the rest of the information provided.
The quote from The Great Gatsby “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is proven true in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The characters, events that occur and overall theme help prove that once a person makes it past the bad, they are easily pulled back in. Amir is one of the characters that proves this true. He has an action filled childhood with many twists and turns. As he grows up, the action never seems to cease as he is faced with conflict after conflict.
