The term ‘conservative’ can refer to reasonable or cautious behaviour, a conventional lifestyle, or a fear of change or refusal to change. At first, in the USA ‘conservatism’ implied a pessimistic view of public affairs. Later the term would be used to stand for opposition to the principles of the 1789 Revolution. In the UK, Conservative replaced Tory as a title of the principal opposition party to the Whigs. Conservative ideas arose in reaction to the growing pace of political, social and economic change, which was symbolized by the French Revolution.
