Writing an essay is difficult as it is but my unwillingness to not analyze specific doctrines does not compare to the unwillingness of the government to mend the breaking union. Northern and Southern states differed politically, economically, and socially; thus setting the stage for one of the biggest battles in American history. The constitution was intended to be this almighty document that united the states and kept them in balance but tension rose greatly. Even though the constitution is ultimately our most important historical “rulebook” it failed in the 1850’s being the primary cause for a Civil War. If mail were to fly away from the person receiving it, that loss of property would be describing the slaves in the Southerners opinion. They were property to the South and if they would try to go somewhere else they would be sent right where they started. Harriet Tubman escaped slavery, and went back to save her people. The underground railroad was an effective process of fleeing plantations that she had conducted. Running away to freedom was quite risky especially after the fugitive slave laws were implemented. Imagine escaping slavery but coming back “He was immediately chained and handcuffed; and thus, without a moment's warning, he was snatched away, and forever sundered, from his family and friends, by a hand more unrelenting than death” (Frederick Douglass) One of the fortunate former slaves that managed to keep his freedom. This most likely refers to their expansionist ways and the harsh impact Manifest Destiny had on national unity. In Kansas free-soilers prompted to control the government. John Brown a more violent abolitionist fought a war with pro-slavery forces. Violence erupted and escalated around the territory. Senator Sumner was even attacked with a cane because of the contradictory opinions regarding constitutional laws. This period from 1855 to 1861 proved that the only probable way to resolve the dispute was through
