The cause of most political dispute around 1820-1860 was mostly about slavery. There has been division between the North and the South, though compromise had usually serve in calming the disagreement. However, nearing 1860, political compromise appeared useless. Comprises simply postponed addressing the issue, and led to even more greater issues than needed,compromise wasn’t working politically, socially,and economically for our nation.
Leonidas Polk was born in April of 1806 and grew up in North Carolina. He came from a wealthy family (Leonidas Polk) who had a bloodline of generals in the Revolutionary War. Along with being tied to the University of North Carolina, his family also had connections at West Point Military Academy. Polk would later start his military career by joining West point, but would eventually become a pastor (HistoryNet).
Grant was a very prominent figure of the time period and led the Union to victory and helped heal the fractured United States afterward. General Grant began his military career at West Point when he was just sixteen. He was top of his class and when he graduated, he began his four years of service and went into combat in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to captain as a result of his bravery during the war. After this, his four-year commitment to the army was up, he left and did not expect to come back.
He was largely self-educated with little formal education, although his parents were largely illiterate. In March of 1830, his family moved to New Salem Illinois where he tried his hand at a variety of occupations including rail splitting, flatboat man, store keeper, postmaster, and surveyor. Abraham began his political career March 1832. He was a popular orator who could draw large crowds but lacked money, connections, and an education. As expected, he lost the election.
In 1852, he was sent to Fort Vancouver, in what is now Washington State. In 1853, Grant was promoted to captain and shipped to Fort Humboldt on the Northern California coast, where he had a run-in with the fort's officer, Lieutenant Colonel
Grant is known as the 18th president of the United States, as well as being a commanding general that worked closely with Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. The book Ulysses S. Grant is written by Josiah Bunting III. Bunting was mesmerized by U.S. Grant for several reasons. Bunting found U.S. Grant to be the necessary American of his time, such as him being a Westerner by birth and him being a person to not explain, but to just do it. He found U.S. Grant to be an independent, inner-directed soul who is always aggressive in adversity, and can be canny or wise at times.

Shortly thereafter he was moved to be a brigadier general over a larger portion of the army. Two months later he was given command of the District of Southeast Missouri. In less than one year Ulysses S. Grant was given three different positions in Northern Army (Civil War Trust). Early in the war he started the way he did things very differently. His strategy was simply, “Find out where your enemy is, get him as soon as you can, strike at him as hard as you can, and keep moving forward” (Creating America 493).
Ulysses S. Grant's wife Julia Boggs Dent was born January 26, 1826, in St. Louis, Missouri. She and Grant got married August 22, 1848, in St. Louis, Missouri on the corner of 4th and Cerre Streets. She and Grant had 4 children named Jesse Root Grant, Ellen Wrenshall Grant, Fredrick Dent Grant, and Ulysses S. Grant Jr. Julia died December 14, 1902. Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 with the name Hiram Ulysses Grant but was known as U.S. Grant when he joined the military. He wasn’t the only Union General during the time of the Civil war, it wasn’t until 1864 when he became general at the age of 42 years old. After the long devastating war ended, Grant became the President of the United States of America. He was not politically experienced and he was also the youngest president at the time. Ulysses S. Grant was born in 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio.
P.6 Compromises seemed to be working in 1820 as a solution to political issues that America agreed to disagreed on. As seen in the Missouri Compromise, where Henry Clay made slaves free in twelve states and not free in the other twelve; in order to keep everything balanced. But between the period of 1820 to 1860, compromising took a shift and no longer seemed to be the solution. Compromises worked with Henry Clay in the Missouri compromise in 1820 but by 1860 due to a series of geographic, political, and social changes compromises were impossible.
There were many important Compromises between the years of 1820 and 1860, some that worked completely and some that didn’t. In the early nineteenth century, people were good at compromising and making things work for everyone. How long did perfect compromising actually last? Slavery began to split the nation apart, causing compromising to become hard to do.
General Ulysses S. Grant was a very powerful man. He was the son of a tanner on the Western frontier. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was very modern, and thought you had to work hard no matter what. Grant was a man that did not live in the past.
Grant had been sent to fight in the Mexican War which during he served as quartermaster efficiently seeing over movement of supplies, and developed a reputation for being able to get food and supplies over even the toughest of terrains. Grant served under General Zachary Taylor and then later served under General Winfield Scott, who from would learn much through observation of their military tactics and leadership skills. Grant was given an opportunity to lead a company into combat where his was credited for his bravery under fire. Grant had developed strong feelings that the Mexican war was wrong and that it was only being waged to increase America’s territory for the spread of slavery. Grant returned from Mexico at the rank of Brevet Captain, where it was at this time he was able to take Julia Dent’s hand in marriage on the August 22, 1848.
