The word "mara" is derived from the marabuntas ants in allusion to how to operate the organization the same way the ant expanded and destroyed everything to find the path. They share the ambition to rapidly expand their organization to other states of the U.S., also in El Salvador, Honduras, Central America and Canada. One similarity is a large percentage of their members are not US citizens that lead to deportation of high numbers of them.

Also, they had a reputation of fighting a lot and always got into trouble with the police for gang activities. I believe that if you are labelled something you are not, you turn into that label. It doesn't really matter what you do or say, people judge and you will become what you are labelled. That is the problem.

One ramification of Black Organized Crime was the Gangster Disciples. This group was a Chicago-based street gang that started in the late 1960s by a merging of two gangs. They were a well-organized group and they had tens of thousands of members spread around the streets of Chicago. According to Abadinsky (2013)," the Gangster Disciples are Chicago's best-known African American crime group. " This being said people wanted to be a part of the Gangster Disciples mostly for the prestige of having that title; since everyone was welcomed many people joined.

White gangs, specifically white prison gangs, emerged in the United States around the 1950’s. It wasn’t until the Aryan Brotherhood who originated in California in the 1960’s was the first group who combined gang activities with white supremacy. Since in the 1960’s and 1980’s some prisons were still racially segregated, which helped keep the violence with in the prisons low; once desegregation of the prisons took place the violence in the prisons rose. At the same time in the 1980’s several white prison gangs were created. This includes the Aryan Brotherhood of Texan, the Aryan Circle, the Aryan Warriors, the Ohio Aryan Brotherhood, and many others (Anti-Defamation League 2016:18).
The differences between youth gangs’ back then and modern youth gangs seen now are the members are not only better armed but also noticeably more violent and cruel. Youth gangs are taking over the streets and leaving their mark on communities. Gang members have instilled fear in society causing many people to be afraid to fight back when being targeted by gangs because they feel that it would be more dangerous to “test” the members. They feel that the only opinion they have in surviving is allowing the gang members to do as they please.
