CHAPTER ONE The Schutzstaffel Hitler 's reign of power in Germany began January 30, 1933. This was to be the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in modern history. The Schutzstaffel or what is commonly referred to as the SS, was primarily established as a protection squadron and known throughout Nazi Germany as the Black Shirts. The SS was a central organization within the Third Reich 's power structure.
In the 1930's, Germany was overruled by an a tyrannical regime known as the Nazis. The Nazis believed solely in the racial superiority of Normadic-Germans, and used control over the flow of information through the country to keep these harmful views relevant and accepted. They did this by limiting allowed media intake and censoring any non-propaganda content. Anyone who spoke out against them or their philosophies was captured and killed or tortured. Despite rejecting these intentions, many citizens of Germany were forced to stay quiet for these reasons.

It is, however, written from a British perspective in a post-war attitude in 1956. It shows that the Nazis were protesting “any decision that could be challenged” and were trying very hard to win everything they possibly could. This document argues that the Nazis would take any measure to further push Hitler’s demands in the Olympics. It, however, could be biased, as the attitude in 1956 in Britain was one of recent success, as it is just after World War II, after the axis, including the Nazis, lost to the allied powers, including the British. In addition, it was from a British team official, who even further likely has a bias towards Britain.
The Nazi Party was revered and feared because they were able to exploit people’s fears. The Nazi party existed before the rise of Hitler, but they were a small and virtually unnoticeable party. The entire world was hit by an economic depression in the early 1930s and Germany was not immune. The people of the country were angry and impatient and feared that their parliament was too weak to rectify the economic situation.
Who knew a leader of a country that was so racist and cruel, known as Adolf Hitler, would host 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. Hitler did not like sports, but he still had to host the games as they were awarded to Berlin prior to Hitler taking power. Instead of being known as the Berlin Olympics they were called the Nazi Olympics. The Nazi Olympics came at an important time during World War II and was a distraction from the actual war going on. Hitler used the Olympics to help build support for his Nazi movement.
In 1936, the Olympic Games were to be held in Berlin, Germany that upcoming year. America, who brought athletes was also there to scout out this new society. After all seemed fine, Hitler began to persecute specific groups such as the Jews, the Gypsies, the homosexuals, and the elderly. Shops were smashed and ruined and many were taken to concentration camps, a camp where very few survived. The Germans gained allies quickly, which included Italy and Japan.
At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, “African American sprinter Jesse Owen amazed the world by breaking records and winning, four gold medals in Berlin, the headquarters of Hitler’s Nazi regime” (Jesse Owens). Owens shocked the world when he won four gold medals in one olympic. He shocked Americans and Hitler, but mostly Hitler. Hitler became really mad and left the stadium so he wouldn't have to congratulate Jesse Owens. Also, “Owen became known not only for his athletic triumphs but for his epic embrace with Aryan German competitor Luz Long and for the social barriers he broke down in the face of Hitler’s Nazi regime.
That day he won 4 gold medals, after Owens won his 3rd gold medal, Hitler left the stadium. This shows separation and isolation because neither of these people did not get invites to events that they should get. Mistreatment Another strategy that the Nazis used was mistreating the Jewish people in the camps. Elie Wiesel was a 15-year-old who was sent to Auschwitz, but he didn’t know what it was at the time. Elie Wiesel says he heard,” Men to the left!
Italian culture is one of history, family, and religion. Italian immigrants experienced hardships all the way from the poverty in Italy to the less than welcoming established people and Catholic Church of the United States. This is illustrated in the book The Madonna of 115th Street: Faith and Community in Italian Harlem, 1880-1950 by Robert A. Orsi, referenced throughout this paper. The celebration and historical tradition of the Madonna of 115th Street reflects the Italians culture and story. As immigrants they struggled to be fully accepted into the Catholic Church.

Prior to his departure, Hitler had received a number of winners, but Olympic officials informed the German leader that in the future he must receive all of the winners or none at all. After the first day, he opted to acknowledge none. (Schmitz) This quote explains what happened on the first day of the Olympics.
The Hesitation in the German Citizens Throughout the 1930’s the amount of control that the Nazi government had over Germany and its citizens was rapidly growing. Propaganda of misconceptions of the Jews had also affected why the villages and German citizens did not act against the Nazi’s. The Nazi government structure had also issued the propaganda through media, news, and products and was at a constant flow. The Bystander Effect also contributed to why the people did nothing to stop the concentration camps.
First, in Nov. 1938, Kristallnacht created a landmark in Jewish torture. Then again, when Hitler came to Germany, he didn’t start the Anti-semitic. Furthermore, when the Nazis got their hands on Propaganda, information and the press, the anti-Jewish campaign began to grow. As a result, these are facts that caused this problems. First, in Nov. 1938, Kristallnacht created a landmark in Jewish torture.
In history, the 1936 Summer Olympic Games stand out. In 1934 before the Nazis came to power, it was decided that Berlin, Germany would host the Games. When Hitler became ruler, he saw this as his chance to show his people how and what his perfect race could be. Sadly for Hitler, his hopes were ruined by USA team member Jesse Owens, who ended up dominating the track and field events.
Propaganda has been used in history and modern day to persuade or present information to people that might be true or false depending on the view of the person. The definition of propaganda is ideas, information, and other material made to win people over to a doctrine. Propaganda is important to any totalitarian regime, to show the population that their condition is completely normal and hide the truth from the people. Nazis had used propaganda and manipulated the German people with their deception and false promises. Propaganda did not just appear everywhere with no help; Joseph Goebbels was the minister of propaganda under Adolf Hitler.
