1960: Changing of the Times In the 1960s there was a lot of change. Starting with the civil rights movement, in which African American protested segregation. The performed sit in and freedom rides. Feminism movement was a major key in the 1960s. Women organized to demand equal rights in education and work and work force. The 60s was pivotal in what we now see in the American society. From the music we hear to the cars that we drive. The civil right rights movement during this time had grew more rapidly than ever before. Thanks to the help of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcom X. Starting with John F Kennedy given a new light on what is now the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Rock n Roll was more defined now, leading to a counter culture where experimentation and alternative views of a good society. The music now was an unwritten soundtrack of what was taking place in the nation. Artist and the music they have provided did not focus on solidarity. In, 1969, Woodstock a music festival in New York that would become the most influential music festival of all time. Jimi Hendrix performed the “Star Spangled Banner” which was done to represent the screams of those who had died in Vietnam. 2 years earlier during the summer of love, The Monterey Pop Festival shaped the way the pop culture was seen. The 3-day event was put together in a 2-month time to bring the underground music scene to light. This actual gave Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Janis Joplin a stage to perform which help them launch their careers. During this time with the experimentation you had people trying marijuana, teenagers doing heroin and even trying LSD. These drugs use for the spiritual affects and to explore pleasure (Robison, J
