Social Movements During 1950 to 1970, there were many social movements created by society. The groups that formed the Civil Rights Movements were all those of who have suffered from discrimination. Those include racial, homosexuality, gender, and elderly discrimination. Civil Rights, Student Movement, Counterculture Movement, Women’s Movement, and Gay Rights Movement, all occurred between this time period. When Huge movements such as these are formed, strengths and weaknesses are prominent. The Civil Rights Movement has always been a big part of history. This social movement declared to, “Create a more democratic society through political reforms, racial equality, and workers’ rights.”. (Shii and Tindall Pg.1064) This again, was another movement that wanted to focus on racial segregation for human rights but later caused antiwar. The Counterculture Movement was a huge group during the 60’s-70’s. After the Watergate scandal of the president, people felt as if they should not trust in the government and president. The “Hippies” wanted to just start rebelling and living life their own way. Hippies believed that they should focus on their inner-selves and just getting along with society as a whole and not interfering with political activism. The Women’s Movement was another topic that had previously been mentioned, but ignored, in the past. This movement wanted to, “Challenge social assumptions of Women’s domesticity.”, they also wanted to, “Fight against gender discrimination and for reproductive rights.”. (Shii and Tindall Pg.1064) Women wanted to be paid the same as men, attain the same rights, and have their own say in their own bodies, such as abortion.
