“Air pollution is the biggest environmental health problem and is affecting everyone from developing and developed countries, rich and less rich,” said Maria Neira, Director of Public Health and the Environment for WHO. Air pollution has become a huge threat to everyone especially considering global warming. The most known form of air pollution is smog hanging over cities, but there are different kinds of pollution. Some forms of air pollution aren’t even visible, but all of it still contributes to global warming. Air pollution can mean any substance that sends things into the atmosphere and has damaging effects. In the 1970s air pollution in Los Angeles was nothing how it is now. The pollution was so harmful that people would get sick from taking a deep breath, people would get pain just from taking just a deep breath. There were days where the pollution so dangerous that parents kept children out of school, emergency rooms overflowed, and athletic events were canceled. As early as the 1940s, Los Angeles had over a million vehicles on the road. Vehicles were a threat to air pollution because it increased the growth of the pollution, as the pollution grew the amount of vehicles also did. Around the 1950s the amount of vehicles doubled, that meant air pollution was only getting worse. Most people didn’t realize how much of a threat the cars became so they didn’t do much about the cars at the time. City leaders like the Chamber of Commerce, started to notice how damaging air pollution was getting. They realized it started to threaten tourism, real estate and agriculture. In general California is still known to have the nation’s worst smog and does not meet existing smog limits, according to an article on Marketplace. State regulators say to make a bigger change, California would need to make a change to their transportation, including; cars, trucks, ships, trains and construction equipment. Air pollution leads to irritating airways and leads to worsening and causing asthma, bronchitis, and even affects heart and lung diseases. Los Angeles used to be a region that would have more than two-hundred bad air days a year and has now dropped around a third of that even though population and vehicle numbers have increased.
