The book The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives enhanced my understanding by reading on Abramsky explore poverty in the United States over a fifty year period. His detailed perspective on how poverty, social attitudes, and public policy have changed over the years. It was also helpful that Abramsky studied all over the United States and didn’t only research a few states. He looked at inner cities to rural areas, as well as, families suffering from intergenerational poverty. All in all, this is a good read if you are concerned about the current state of our

Poverty in America Poverty in the United States is a serious problem including all races. Black people have a higher poverty percentage than other races. The book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore himself explains his teenage life growing up in poverty and all the struggles he had to face as a black kid. Statistics show that the poverty rates for blacks according to 2015 is up to 24% and that number keeps increasing into 2016 (Jones 1). Most people say that it's black people's own fault that they have high poverty rates, and there is more in depth explanation for why black people have a very high percent of poverty compared to other races.
Many Americans throughout their life might experience at least a one year in poverty. To be considered living in poverty your annual income must be below the official poverty line. In the article “Poverty in America is Mainstream” by Mark R. Rank, he states that there are myths and stereotypes that surround poverty in America, including that poverty only affects a small number of Americans. Rank uses justifying statistics, as well as appeals to the audience’s emotions, and his credibility to get us to truly understand that poverty can/does affect the everyday American.

In this topic, I will be exploring the combination of sociopolitical factors that contribute to poverty in a community, otherwise known as comparative disadvantage. I chose Atlanta, not only because I lived near the major city, but also because of its known high, poverty rates. In the past decade, poverty has increased and spread throughout Atlanta. Population and job growth have been occurring rapidly, but so has the urbanization of the city. Growing up near Atlanta, I found that the southern metro area had a vast increase in the distribution of poverty.

More than one in five American children are poor and the poor are getting poorer.” (George 676) Among racial and ethnic groups, African Americans had the highest poverty rate, followed by Hispanics and whites. According to The State of Working America, 45.8 percent of young black children live in poverty, compared to 14.5 percent of white children.
One thing that Edin and Shaefer makes abundantly clear is that poverty has no face. Victims of a failing economic system come from different backgrounds and all have different stories. Americans have been struggling since the Great Depression to get ahead and stay above the poverty line. This article states that more than 28 million working people in America are making less than minimum wage. There are several contributing factors which lead to people being classified as poor. The cost of childcare, health insurance, college, and living have impacted families leaving them unable to get ahead in this country.
