Even in the land of the free, we are all not completely free. George Orwell was truly ahead of his time when he wrote his book 1984, which was a fiction book about a dystopian society where the government, also known as the party, is in control of every aspect of life and the society suffers because of it. Ultimately in todays world the government is in charge even in our free society. The government watches us, brainwashes us, and erases our history, just like in Orwell's novel. Although our government in the United States is not as severe or harsh as the one in 1984, we can still make connections between the two through the use of technology, propaganda, and rewriting history. We don't have as strict of guidelines as the party, but our methods of surveillance are similar. In 1984 the government severely brainwashes society which keeps their emotions and thoughts suppressed in order to make everyone love the party leader Big Brother. They achieve this by using extreme propaganda so everyone just believes in anything that is fed to them. We see this happening today in the United States between our two major political parties. The news media helps spread the ideals of the parties by having interviews and showing commercials with candidates or leaders. The discussion of politics and moral beliefs has been proven to be one of the quickest ways to divide people and cause tension in our society. Each party has their own interpretation of how historical events went down and that is also another subject that causes a lot of tension in our country is our history. In Orwell's novel, the society is clueless about their history and this causes the spread of misinformation.
