George Orwell, pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, (b. 1903, d. 1950) was a famous English author who wrote dystopian novels such as 1984 (1949) and Animal Farm (1945). Early in his career, he worked for BBC, and later he became an editor for a left wing magazine called The Tribune. Orwell’s essay, Politics and the English Language (1946), is how he sees the English Language and how he believes it will be affected in the future. The information he delivers in the essay can be considered professional after his experience with editing and writing. The main idea of the essay was how politics and economics affect and deteriorate the language. For example, instead of writing that someone is a fool, a writer using pretentious dictions may write that they are “quite an imbecile.” Pretentious dictions are more frequent in sociological, scientific, and political writing, as their writing pieces often contain Latin terminology practically no one uses.
