The government of Oceania is an omniscient super organization where inside all, things are seen, heard, and observed by them, as if the government were a god. George Orwell in 1984 created the most effective totalitarian government the world had ever seen. Although you are never really in the mind of any other characters in the book, Winston is likely unique in his ability to inquire into the power of Oceania and the reach of their technology. For example, when Winston says “The Party’s surveillance tactics and technology are so advanced that even the smallest twitch can betray a rebellious spirit.” (Orwell 65) he is aware of how little ability he has to live a free life and how powerful the government really is. Like Winston we live in a world full of cameras, computers, and Tvs. The difference is that there isn’t always someone looking in from the other side, and that if there is that person likely is not as strict or powerful as any one of the employees at the Ministry of Truth are.
