How is privacy more important today than in 1984?
Nowadays teenagers are manipulated by social media which is causing our lives to be less private, just as George Orwell says in 1984. Probably one of the greatest inventions in the past decade has been social media, we can connect with friends, share photos, and build relationships. Social media comes with a price which is privacy. Many users find it difficult to understand the consequences of a world where private is now public. People invading others privacy has been more of an issue ever since the internet became into existence . Privacy in 1984 and privacy now days are unalike, George Orwell's prediction of the futures privacy was incorrect according to CNN “That proved George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four" incredibly prescient yet woefully incorrect”(Cashmore 1-2). Technology also comes with a price which is privacy. “The aim of such technology is to improve care, but it also raises concerns about increased access to personal health information and fears of data theft” (Gale Student Resources 30-31). Hospitals and medical centers store all their data on the computers meaning the risk of data theft is high. Data theft would be interfering with privacy because strangers would be looking at some else's medical record. Even the protection of passwords isn't strong enough to secure citizens from being spy on. “Strong passwords and encrypted email services were never truly enough to protect users' online privacy”(Pagliery 4). Passwords are used to defend against threats from the internet such as hackers and viruses. Sometimes those passwords can be decrypted and bypassed by hackers and that's when our private information turns into public
